March 1, 2006 ORANGEBURG, SC - The UMES Lady Hawks won a hard fought contest against South Carolina State (SCSU) Wednesday night. The Lady Hawks, who erased a 12-point first half deficit to get the win, took a 65-58 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) decision against the Lady Bulldogs at the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center. The maroon and gray win ensures at least a fourth-place MEAC finish for the Lady Hawks. UMES (14-12, 11-6 MEAC) got a game high 28 points from senior Toni Kennedy (Baltimore, Md.). Freshman Tiffany Reid (Philadelphia, Pa.) chipped in with 11 points while senior Jamila Griffith (Barbados, West Indies) pulled down a game high 13 rebounds. Melaney Denson's double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds led SCSU (12-14, 9-8 MEAC). Monica Adams had 12 points while Latoya Dent chipped in with 10. The Lady Hawks owned a 52-40 rebound advantage over the Lady Bulldogs and held SCSU to just eight field goals in the second half. UMES also held the Lady Bulldogs to 19% shooting from beyond the arc and outscored SCSU 37-20 in the second period. The Lady Bulldogs held the advantage in the first half, however, as they ended the period on a 13-5 run en route to a 10-point lead at the break, 38-28. The Lady Hawks got on track in the second half and outscored SCSU 19-8 to take a 47-46 lead, their first advantage since 12:34 in the first half.
The Lady Bulldogs scored the next four points but UMES jumped out to another run, this time a 14-2 spurt, to put them up by nine points with just under three minutes left in regulation. Rachael Goodwin hit a pair of free-throws to seal the come from behind win for the Lady Hawks. UMES faces off against Howard in a decisive regular season finale this Saturday, March 4. The senior day contest, which will decide the 3-4 seeds for next week's MEAC tournament, is slated for a 2 pm tip off at the Hytche Center. |
