BALTIMORE - Despite outrebounding their opponent in the game, the Lady Hawks dropped the game against Morgan State 65-28 on Saturday. UMES falls to 7-18 and 3-11 in conference play while Morgan State improves to 10-17 this season and 7-7 in the MEAC.

After UMES won the opening tip, Shawnee Sweeney (Colonial Heights, Va.) scored a layup in the opening four seconds. She scored UMES's next basket as the Lady Hawks led early 4-2 in the first four-and-a-half minutes.

The home team went on a 10-0 run to take the lead. UMES scored four points in a row off free throws by Ashleigh Claybrooks (Manassas, Va.) and a Taryana Kelly (North Brunswick, N.J.) layup to get within four 12-8 with 9:37 left to go in the half.

Morgan State went on a surge the remainder of the period, scoring 20 points in a row to go into the locker room up 32-8.

After the Lady Bears got the half's opening basket, UMES got some offense going, piecing together an 8-3 run, capped by a Sha-Kiyla Finney (Portsmouth, Va.) three-pointer, to make the score 38-16.

UMES went back and forth for a while with the Lady Bears but ultimately could not make up the deficit and fell 65-28.

Sweeney led all UMES players with seven points, shooting 3-6 from the field. Kelly got a career-high nine rebounds, getting four points.

For the Lady Bears, Bianca Jarrett shot 10-17 from the floor to finish with 27 points and six rebounds. Chyress Lockhart got eight points, three steals and three boards.

 

 

The Lady Hawks will return to Baltimore on Monday to take on Coppin State at 5:30 p.m.
