NORFOLK, Va. – On a snowy day down the Eastern Shore parts of Virginia and Maryland, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women’s basketball team battled until the final buzzer, but were unable to complete the comeback as they fell to the Spartans of Norfolk State University, 61-57.

With the loss, the Lady Hawks dropped to 7-20 overall (3-12 MEAC) while Norfolk State improved to 12-14 (8-7 MEAC) on the season.

UMES was nearly perfect from the free-throw line as the team shot 93-percent (14-of-15), led by Junior guard Jessica Long (Fort Washington, Md.). Long ended her night registering a game-high 19 points, including a perfect 7-of-7 from the charity stripe.

Nearly four minutes into the second half, the Lady Hawks tied the game, 32-32, after going on a 12-6 run, sparked by back-to-back steals and layups from Long within the first minute of the half. In the next six minutes, Maryland Eastern Shore took their largest lead of the game, 43-39, after a layup from Ashleigh Claybrooks (Manassas, Va.).

The Spartans regained their composure and reclaimed the lead, 58-49, with less than four minutes in regulation, but the Lady Hawks refused to give in. Within the next two minutes, UMES scored six unanswered points to cut the deficit to a one-possession game, 60-57. A free-throw from Norfolk State’s Koryn Lawrence sealed the deal for the Spartans as they knocked off UMES, 61-57.

Other notable Hawk performances included Shawnee Sweeney (Chester, Va.) recording nine points, including 4-of-4 from the free-throw line, while Claybrooks and Mariah McCoy (Rock Hill, S.C.) each notched eight points in the loss.

A layup from the Spartans’ Rachel Gordon gave Norfolk State an early five-point lead, 12-7, with less than eight minutes into the contest. Within the next two minutes, Maryland Eastern Shore found themselves in a double-digit deficit, 17-7, but not for long as McCoy nailed a three-pointer shortly after, 17-10.

UMES clawed away at NSU’s lead and another long ball from McCoy made the game a one-possession game, 21-18, with less than four minutes before intermission. A late layup from NSU’s Koryn Lawrence with less than 60 ticks to go gave the Spartans a six-point lead at halftime, 26-20.

For the Spartans, Quineshia Leonard had a double-double, 10 points and 14 rebounds, while Dominque Harper scored 12 points, including 5-of-10 from the floor. Lawrence and Rae Corbo each added 11 points in the victory.
