Richmond, VA - Tiffany Winkfield scored 20 of her career-high 31 points in the second half to lead Maryland Eastern Shore to a 79-61 win over North Carolina A&T in the play-in round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference women's tournament at the Arthur Ashe Center. The seventh seeded Lady Hawks (12-16) advance to the quarterfinal round where they will play Hampton University, the Number 2 seed on Wednesday. Winkfield keyed a 15-4 run at the end of the first half that saw her team rebound from a 30-21 deficit and take a 36-34 lead at intermission. The Lady Aggies (7-22), who were the 11th seed, would not go away, however and battled to a 40-40 tie at the 17:45 mark. Following a UMES timeout, Winkfield took over again, scoring 11 of her points during a 22-3 run that increased the lead to 62-43 at the 7:23 mark "We changed our defense to a 3-2 zone and forced them to shoot from the perimeter," said UMES Coach Surina Dixon. "We were able to rebound and get out on the break and get some easy baskets. Tiffany is a great player and she showed why she is a first team all-conference selection." Winkfield's 31 points was also a tournament record, eclipsing the old mark of 30 set by Monica Felder, also of UMES, in 1985. Despite the success of the Lady Hawks, pesky North Carolina A&T still had a run left, compliments of Winkfield's three fouls that forced her to the bench for three minutes. The Lady Aggies took advantage of her absence by putting together an 11-2 run that shaved the margin to 66-55 with 3:08 still left on the clock. Following a UMES timeout, Winkfield re-entered the game and added two quick baskets to seal the win and send the Lady Hawks to the next round.
Laconia Hatcher added 17 off the bench for the Lady Hawks and LaToshia Bailed contributed 10.
The Lady Aggies were led by Camile Akins, who tallied 25 and Yanumbe Sherman and Tia Richardson, who each scored 12. |
