March 10, 2004 Richmond, VA - Nicole Brathwaite scored 25 points and Sharema Dean added 24 to lead Hampton University to a 77-64 win over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in the quarterfinal round of the 2004 Dodge Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament at the Richmond Coliseum. The Lady Pirates (15-12), the Number 2 seed, will play the winner of the Coppin State-Bethune-Cookman College on Friday, live on MBC-TV at approximately 8 p.m. Hampton, which has won 10 in a row, controlled the game from the beginning as Dean and Brathwaite combined for 25 of their team's points as the Lady Pirates took a 33-24 lead to the locker room. "Nicole and Sharema complement each other well," said Hampton Coach Patricia Bibbs. "Sharema is more of a finesse player while Nicole knows how to use her body well. Dean, the MEAC Rookie of the Year did most of her damage in transition and a combination of slashes to the basket and short pull up jumpers in the lane. For the game, she hit on 11 of 17 from the field. Brathwaite, a first team All-conference selection, provided the power, connecting 8 of 11 shots from the field-many coming from inside the paint-- and grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds. The Lady Hawks (12-17), the Number 7 seed, was hampered early and never fully recovered due to the loss of Tiffany Winkfield to foul trouble. Winkfield, coming off a tournament record 31 points in the first round, played only 27 minutes and scored only 10 points, five under her average. "Anytime you lose a player of the caliber of Tiffany, it takes a lot from what you like to do," said UMES Coach Surina Dixon. Octavia Thompson led UMES with 11 points and Jamila Griffith added 10.
The game marks the final one for six senior Lady Hawks. Tiffany Winkfield, LaToshia Bailey, Ckyla Grays, Kimberbly Martin, Paula Tucker, and Tekeya Gooden all concluded their collegiate careers today.
