LORETTO, PA The UMES women's basketball team dropped their season opener 63-59 to St. Francis (PA) Friday evening at the DeGol Center. The Lady Hawks got 13 points each from Danielle Cooper and Candyce Jeter. Junior Kristi Veltkamp chipped in with 11 while freshman April McBride had a team high seven rebounds. The Red Flash entered the second half with a 31-23 lead which quickly evaporated thanks to a 13-1 run by UMES midway through the second half. The Flash, however, would rally behind solid free-throw shooting down the stretch, particularly that of senior Christie Ayers. Ayers sank five from the line in the game's final five minutes to help put the game away. Ayers finished the day with nine points just ahead of Halter who, in a rare show of outside range, shot and made her first three-pointer in a Red Flash uniform. And it couldn't have come at a better time. Tied 18-all with just under five minutes left in the first half, Halter's three sparked a 13-5 run that would ensure a Flash lead entering the intermission. UMES (0-1) returns to action on Sunday when they travel to Texas to take on the Longhorns in the first game of the Basketball Travlers Classic.
