AUSTIN, TEXAS - #25 Texas downed UMES 78-55 in the opening day of the Basketball Travelers Classic today in Austin. Kristi Veltkamp paced the Lady Hawks with a team high 14 points. Veltkamp, Natalia Benton and Jasmine Speed led the maroon and gray in rebounding with five boards each while Danielle Cooper dished out a game-high seven assists.

Preseason All-American Tiffany Jackson led UT's scoring with 24 points while Erika Arriaran and Earnesia Williams added 15 and 10, respectively. Erneisha Bailey pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Longhorns committed 18 fouls compared to 28 by the maroon and gray and held an advantage on the charity stripe, going 25-37 from the line with UMES finishing 13-18. Texas also held a 39-35 rebound advantage and stole the ball 15 times while forcing 29 Hawk turnovers.

"We didn't have a game plan for Texas and their size," said UMES Head Coach Fred Batchelor. "All we could do was swing at the bully and not be scared. You look at Tiffany Jackson, a great player. Texas is playing kids 6-1, 6-2 on the wing and it's hard to compete with that.

UMES (0-2) held their own with UT in the first half and held a lead the first four minutes of the game. Arriaran's free-throws at 15:56 sparked a 10-2 Texas run to give the Longhorns a 20-8 lead. Veltkamp's layup at 9:24 cut the UT lead down to seven, but Bailey's free throw late in the half gave Texas another double-digit lead.

Qiana Cheatham hit a trey with just under a minute left to drop the Longhorn lead to 11 going into the break, 38-27.

Texas took advantage of several Hawk miscues early in the second half, holding UMES scoreless the first five minutes of the decision. A Cheatham free-throw at 14:32 broke the maroon and gray scoring drought. Baskets by Jackson and Arriaran pushed Texas up by 20 midway through the half.

Williams' jumper at 5:40 gave UT a 26-point lead, their largest of the night.

"Let's give credit to Maryland-Eastern Shore," said Texas Head Coach Jody Conradt. "They played really hard. Every time we ran the shot clock down, they stepped up and made shots, especially in the first half."

In the pre-determined format on Monday (Nov. 13), Texas State (0-1) faces Maryland-Eastern Shore (0-2) at 5 p.m. (Central) at the Erwin Center, while ULL (1-0) squares off against Texas (1-0) in a 7:30 p.m. game which will air on FSN SW (FOX Sports Net Southwest TV).
