AUSTIN, TEXAS - UMES shot 24% from the field as the Lady Hawks fell 68-36 to Louisiana-Lafayette on the final day of the Basketball Travelers Classic Tuesday night in Austin, Texas. UMES (0-4) was outrebounded 57-37 with Jasmine Speed (Chesterfield, Mich.) and April McBride (New Rochelle, N.Y.) leading the way with six boards each. The Lady Hawks committed 21 fouls compared to eight by the Rajun Cajuns, leading to a 10-20 outing from the charity stripe by Louisiana-Lafayette with UMES finishing 1-2 on free-throws. Kristi Veltkmap (Hudsonville, Mich.) was the lone Hawk in double-figures, scoring 11 points on 5-for-15 shooting. The Rajun Cajuns got 19 points and 10 rebounds from Onna Charles. The maroon and gray managed just eight points in the first half and went nearly 10 minutes without scoring until a trey by Candyce Jeter (Baltimore, Md.) at 5:26 ended the drought. The Hawks more than tripled their scoring total in the second half, scoring 28 points while finishing 12-40 from the field. The maroon and gray also held Louisiana-Lafayette to 31% shooting that period (10-32). The Lady Hawks rest for three days before facing off with Canisius on Nov. 17 in Buffalo, N.Y.
