FAIRFAX, Va. - Despite a strong defensive effort early, the Lady Hawks fell to George Mason 64-38 at the Patriot Center on Tuesday night to open the season. UMES falls to 0-1 while George Mason goes to 1-1.

After an opening basket by Joyous Tharrington, Jessica Long(Fort Washington, Md.) hit a three-pointer in the opening minute to give UMES a 3-2 lead.

UMES kept the Patriots to just a couple baskets early, but George Mason led 6-3 after five-and-a-half minutes. Following a Rahneeka Saunders turnover, Shawnee Sweeney(Colonial Heights, Va.) hit a jumper to pull UMES back within one.

At 10-7 Patriots, Sha-Kiyla Finney (Portsmouth, Va.) scored a basket for a one-point game. On UMES's next possession, Shanyce Stewart(Mount Vernon, N.Y.) was sent to the line after being fouled on a putback attempt, hitting two free throws to give the Lady Hawks the lead. UMES's defense held for the next few minutes as Stewart hit a layup, giving UMES a 13-10 advantage with 10:21 left in the first.

George Mason countered with strong defense of its own, holding UMES without a field goal for the next six minutes and going on a 16-0 run, including three baskets by Saunders, for a 26-13 lead with 4:29 left in the period.

After Fred Batchelor called timeout, UMES set up a play and stopped the George Mason run. In her first shot of her UMES career, TeAmber Burke(Washington, N.C.) hit a three-pointer at the top of the arc to cut the deficit to 10.

The Patriots rebuilt their lead to 13 after basket-and-one by Amber Easter, but an Ashleigh Claybrooks(Manassas, Va.) layup put the difference back to 11. However, George Mason's Janaa Pickard had a personal run off three made shots and a pair of free throws to push the home team up 37-18.

On the final shot of the first half, Long buried a very deep three with one second left to put the deficit to 16 going into halftime.

UMES came out with energy at the start of the second half, chipping away at its deficit. After a Stewart free throw, a steal and fast break layup by Long gave the Lady Hawks the first basket of the second half. Karona Roach(Bear, Del.) got the next possession going with a steal, then hitting a second chance three-pointer to get UMES within 10 with 18:05 to play, concluding a 9-0 run.

The home team got its advantage back to 15 after a pair of buckets by Saunders, but UMES responded with an Alexis Udoji(Randolph, Mass.) layup and another Long three to pull back within 10 with 12:33 left.

But that is as close as the Lady Hawks got as the Patriots held UMES without any points for the following nine-and-a-half minutes. George Mason went on a 17-0 run in that time to seal the game. A couple of late Claybrooks baskets towards the end brought UMES closer, but the Lady Hawks fell 64-38 to the Patriots.
