NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. - Junior Kristi Veltkamp (Hudsonville, Mich.) scored a season-high 20 points but it was not enough as the UMES women's basketball team fell to Niagara, 70-54 in non-conference action Sunday afternoon at the Gallagher Center. Veltkamp shot 50% from the field (8-for-16) and finished with a game-high three blocks. Jelila Abdul-Bassit (Anchorage, Alaska) added 11 points while Jasmine Speed (Chesterfield, Mich.) contributed a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds, both career highs. April McBride (New Rochelle, N.Y.) led the team in steals with five while Jaquese Smith (Raleigh, N.C.) dished out a game-high five assists. The Purple Eagles' Shaunna Ambrose scored 18 points while Chantelle Wilson added 14. Niagara (4-0) jumped out to an 18-5 lead to start the first half. Veltkamp's jumper at 11:29 got things going for UMES and spurred a quick 5-0 run by the maroon and gray. A trey by Abdul-Bassit later cut the Purple Eagle lead down to eight points. Veltkamp's basket with 25 seconds left closed the Hawks within two but Kristina Walton's lay-up put Niagara up by four. The Purple Eagles held a 33-29 lead at halftime. Niagara opened the second half on a 19-4 run to pull ahead by 19 points. UMES rallied midway through the decision with Candyce Jeter's (Baltimore, Md.) three ball sparking a 15-5 Hawk run with 10:30 remaining. Speed's lay-up at 5:46 closed the maroon and gray within nine at 59-50, but the Purple Eagles eventually pushed the lead back to double-digits when Sarah Wilson's lay-up put Niagara up by 11 just a minute later.
UMES (0-6) returns to action on Dec. 2 when it hosts Howard in the Hytche Center. |
