LADY HAWKS HINDERED BY OLD DOMINION PRESSURE, FALL 62-46
Nov. 20, 2012
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The Lady Hawks had trouble with Old Dominion's pressure defense and second half scoring as they fell to the Monarchs 62-46 at the Hytche Athletic Center. UMES falls to 1-2 while Old Dominion goes to 4-0.
After a made Karona Roach(Bear, Del.) free throw, Old Dominion hit a couple of layups in a span of 35 seconds to lead 4-1 after two minutes of play.
The defenses were dominant in the first half, as UMES held the Monarchs without a field goal in the next three minutes. Roach guided the Lady Hawks during this time, hitting four more free throws and knocking down a jumper for a 7-6 advantage with 14:38 left in the half.
Again the defense prevailed, with the game holding at a standstill for the following three minutes. A Sha-Kiyla Finney(Portsmouth, Va.) free throw added a point to UMES's lead at the 11:11 mark.
Tiffany Minor's three-point basket gave the Monarchs the lead 9-8. The next possession, Ashleigh Claybrooks(Manassas, Va.) got fouled and went to the line, hitting one of two free throws to tie it up again at nine with 10:27 in the period.
UMES kept pace with Old Dominion, taking back the lead off a Shawnee Sweeney (Colonial Heights, Va.) three to go up 14-13. Less than a minute later, TeAmber Burke(Washington, N.C.) hit a long two with her foot on the line, pushing UMES up 16-13.
The Monarchs countered with a 6-0 run to go up 19-16. After a Roach free throw, ODU built its lead with a pair of jumper from Shae Kelley and a Jackie Cook three to go up 26-17 into the locker room.
Again Roach stepped up for UMES, going to the line and hitting a free throw, following up with a layup after a Cook basket to pull the Lady Hawks within eight out of the locker room 28-20. It was short-lived, as the Lady Monarchs countered with a 7-2 run, lead by two Cook makes, for a 35-22 ODU advantage with 15:45 left to play.
UMES could not get its offense going, having trouble against the Old Dominion pressure, as the Lady Monarchs kept building its lead off Cook's scoring, eventually going up 43-25 with 12:46 left.
Trying to fight back, the Lady Hawks tried to build on a Claybrooks layup, adding a Shanyce Stewart(Mount Vernon, N.Y.) free throw and Finney fastbreak layup for a 6-0 run, pulling UMES within 12 with under nine-and-a-half to play.
Unfortunately for UMES, Old Dominion responded with five points from Cook on a 7-0 run in a span of two minutes to go up 50-31.
A couple of late threes from Finney were not enough as UMES fell 62-46 to Old Dominion.
Roach led UMES in scoring for the second straight game, earning 14 points and eight rebounds. Finney finished with a career-high 12 points off 4-11 shooting, hitting two from three-point range. Stewart and Claybrooks each concluded with five points.
Cook concluded with 22 points, including 18 in the second half, off 9-14 shooting for the Monarchs. Kelley got a double double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
UMES will take a break for the Thanksgiving holiday and then prepare for the start of MEAC play as the Lady Hawks take on rival Delaware State at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 1st in Dover.
