SYRACUSE, NY. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) lost to Syracuse University, 113-42, at the Carrier Dome. With the loss, the Lady Hawks fell to 1-3 overall while the Orange remained undefeated, 4-0.
Nine Lady Hawks scored, led by sophomore Alexis Udoji (Randolph, MA). Udoji led the Lady Hawks with 10 points, five boards, and two blocks. Senior Shanyce Stewart (Mount Vernon, NY) had a team-high six rebounds, including three offensive boards, while junior Jessica Long chipped in nine points in the loss.
At halftime, UMES trailed, 64-15, to the Orange. In the second half, Syracuse scored on a jumper by Brittney Sykes to extend the lead, 66-15, but a three-pointer by Shawnee Sweeney (Chester, VA) would cut into the Orange lead, 66-18. With just over 17 minutes remaining, sophomore Ashleigh Claybrooks (Manassas, VA) scored her first two points after connecting on back-to-back free-throws and bringing the score to 70-21. With more than 14 minutes left in the game, UMES trailed 73-21, until the Lady Hawks scored four straight points on a jumper by TeAmber Burke (Washington, NC) and back-to-back free-throws from Claybrooks to narrow the gap, 73-25. In the next four minutes, Syracuse increased its lead, 86-31, but a Long lay-up would cut into the lead, 86-33. With just over seven minutes remaining, UMES’ Mariah McCoy (Rock Hill, SC) scored on a lay-up to make the score, 92-36, but the Orange continued to make shots. Syracuse ended the game on a 21-6 run to win, 113-42.
In the first half, the Lady Hawks scored the game’s first point on an Udoji free-throw and took an early lead, 1-0. The Orange responded and went on a 13-3 run, 14-3, with under 15 minutes to go in the first half. Syracuse run continued as they push the lead to 32-6 with less than 10 minutes remaining in the half. With seven-and-a-half left in the first half, the Orange had a commanding lead, 40-9, but a layup by Taylor Thompson (Chapel Hill, NC) cut the lead down, 40-11. Next, UMES went nearly four minutes without a basket until back-to-back free-throws from Udoji ended the drought, 59-13. With 22 seconds remaining in the half, senior Breonna Evans would score the final bucket in the first half on layup to make the halftime score, 64-15.
For Syracuse, four players scored double-figure points, led by Brianna Butler (23). Sykes tallied 19 points and a game-high seven points while La’Shay Taft and Taylor Ford scored 12 and 10 points, respectively.
This Saturday (11/23), UMES returns home to host George Mason University at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. Tip-off is 2:00 p.m.
