ROACH'S 20 POINTS, GAME-TYING THREE NOT ENOUGH AS LADY HAWKS FALL 62-58

EMMITSBURG, Md. - Karona Roach hit a three-pointer with 54 seconds left to tie the game, completing a team comeback from down 12, but UMES fell after late Mount St. Mary's free throws gave the win to the Mount 62-58 at the Knott Arena. UMES goes to 1-4 on the year while Mount St. Mary's improves to 2-4.
Sydney Henderson hit a couple of early shots to give the Mount a 7-2 lead in the opening 2:05.
UMES tried to take advantage of the game with its frontcourt. After hitting the team's first basket, Ashleigh Claybrooks (Manassas, Va.) hit another one to pull the Lady Hawks within three. A later layup by Alexis Udoji(Randolph, Mass.) got UMES to 7-6 with 15:35 in the period.
After the Mount countered with five straight points, a Taryana Kelly (North Brunswick, N.J.) layup started a run for the Lady Hawks. Jessica Long(Fort Washington, Md.) showed some great speed, earning a steal and fast break score in two straight possessions to tie it up at 12, completing a 6-0 run in less than a minute, with 12:37 in the half to go.
The Mount got back its lead, scoring eight points in a row in just over two-and-a-half minutes for a 20-12 advantage. UMES took five points back off a Roach (Bear, Del.) three and Claybrooks putback layup to get within three 20-17. The home team lead went back to six following a Selina Mann three at the 8:22 mark.
While the defense grabbed rebounds, UMES gained its first lead of the game. Sha-Kiyla Finney(Portsmouth, Va.) put in a three and a layup to get the team within one. With 4:50 left in the half, Claybrooks hit a layup to push UMES ahead. Roach added three in the next possession to make it 27-23 UMES with under four minutes remaining in the half.
After a Henderson basket and two Finney free throw conversions, Mann hit four free throws to give the Mount back the lead. Before the end of the half, Taylor Thompson(Chapel Hill, N.C.) hit a putback layup with two seconds left to tie it up at 31.
After a slow start by both teams in the second half, Jacqueline Brewer hit a pair of jumpers for the Mount. Henderson followed up with a layup, then two Kayla Grossett free throws made it 39-32 with 16:17 to play.
Again UMES used its frontcourt to stay close, with a Thompson layup putting the deficit to five. With 13:08 left, a Roach layup made it 43-39 MSM.
Next possession, Mann hit a three to build the lead back to seven. The Mount St. Mary's defense held UMES scoreless for nearly four minutes as the home team built its advantage to 12 at 51-39 with 9:50 left.
A Finney three broke the drought as UMES got back within single digits. The Mount kept a lead, but UMES did not stay far behind in the contest. With 5:40 remaining, the Lady Hawks started hitting free throws, including a four-for-four spot by Roach in a span of 40 seconds, to get the squad within six 56-50. A little over a minute later, Roach hit a jumper to make it 56-52.
Mann scored a layup to put the score at 58-52 Mount St. Mary's with 2:09 left in regulation.
Roach got fouled on the next possession and hit both free throws. The other way, Finney rebounded a Jessie Kaufman missed layup and got fouled, hitting a free throw to make it 58-55. Henderson was fouled the next possession, and she missed the front end of a one-and-one, giving UMES back the ball.
After Finney missed a layup, UMES got the ball back. Roach was set up in the corner and buried the three, tying the game at 58-58 with 54 seconds left.
Next possession, Brewer got fouled and hit a pair of free throws to push MSM back ahead 60-58. UMES got another chance, but a Roach jumper was short. Mann was fouled in the backcourt and hit two free throws with 19 seconds left, and UMES could not get off another shot. The Lady Hawks fell to the Mount 62-58.
Roach finished with a career-high 20 points, including 7-8 from the free throw line. Claybrooks also had a career-high in points with 11 and rebounds with nine, while Finney finished with 11 points.
Mann concluded with 20 points, nine boards, five assists and three steals for the Mount. Henderson got a double double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Grossett got nine points and six boards off the bench.
UMES returns home for a Saturday match against Towson at 2 p.m. at the Hytche Athletic Center.
