WASHINGTON D.C. - Kristi Veltkamp (Hudsonville, Mich.) scored 24 while Qiana Cheatham (Baltimore, Md.) and Jamila Griffith (Barbados, West Indies) added 19 each, but it was not enough as Howard held off the Lady Hawks in overtime, 93-90, in a conference decision Saturday at Burr Gymnasium. Veltkamp added nine rebounds and four blocks, while Griffith pulled down a game high 11 rebounds (including seven on the offensive end). Toni Kennedy (Baltimore, Md.) chipped in with 14 points, 12 of which came in the second half. Cheatham scored 15 of her 19 on treys and went 5-9 from beyond the arc, good for 56%. The Lady Bison got 23 points from Shannon Carlisle and 17 from Brittany James. Christina Aden and Lonice Kenley added 15 each. It was the conference opener for both teams and hard fought affair on both sides as the contest featured 12 lead changes and nine ties. UMES (1-4, 0-1 MEAC) trailed 50-44 at halftime and opened the second half on a 15-6 run. A pair of free-throws by Almalika Lemon (New York, N.Y.) gave the Lady Hawks a 65-60 lead, but Howard rallied and took a 13-2 run capped by a trey by James at 10:03. Howard (2-4, 1-0 MEAC) appeared to have the game won in regulation when they took an 81-78 lead with 10 seconds remaining. But the maroon and grey sent the game into overtime when Veltkamp drained a three from the deep left corner with six seconds remaining. The Lady Bison scored seven of the final nine points in OT to seal the win. The team shot an incredible 89% from the charity stripe in overtime versus just 58% by the visiting Lady Hawks. While UMES got inspired play from the front court of Veltkamp, Griffith and Cheatham, they did not keep track of the ball. Point guards Rachael Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn.) and DeVaughn Hailey (Camden, N.J.) combined for only five points and the team totaled 33 turnovers. It wasn't just the Hawks as Howard also was losing the ball left and right, committing almost 30 turnovers of their own.
UMES is off for a week, next facing off with Bucknell in a home contest on Saturday, Dec. 17. Tip off is slated for 7 p.m. |
