JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Despite 18-point efforts from Sha-Kiyla Finney and Karona Roach and cutting a 17-point deficit to two at the half, UMES fell just short to Campbell 77-72 on the first day of the Lady Osprey Holiday Tournament. UMES falls to 2-5 while Campbell improves to 7-2 on the season.

This is UMES's strongest offensive output of the season, as the young Lady Hawks have improved their point total from the last game each of the past three contests.

Campbell got off to a strong beginning with Kiera Gaines contributing four points on a 12-2 opening run. At 14-5, the Lady Camels used an 8-0 run to go up 22-5 with 11:28 left in the first half.

In the next minute, a Roach (Bear, Del.) jumper, Alexis Udoji (Randolph, Mass.) block and Kiana Sturgis (Pocomoke City, Md.) three pointer on the wing got UMES five quick points.

Down 27-14, free throws from Udoji and Finney (Portsmouth, Va.) brought the Lady Hawks closer. Combined with the UMES zone defense, Finney hit another pair of free throws plus a three-pointer, helping the Lady Hawks to a 10-2 run to cut the deficit to five 29-24 with 5:52 remaining in the half.

UMES went back and forth with Campbell until its opponent rebuilt its lead to nine 39-30, capped by a RaeChaun Edwards three at the 3:14 mark in the period.

The UMES defense locked down the Lady Camels in the remainder of the half, using a Taylor Thompson (Chapel Hill, N.C.) layup, a Roach deep three and Finney fast break layup to cut the deficit to two 39-37 at the end of the half.

Early in the second half, the Lady Hawks countered Campbell baskets to stay within one possession at the 16:45 mark, when a Roach jumper made it 45-43 Campbell.

Campbell got back to a double digit lead in the next 70 seconds, using two Tonisha Baker threes en route to an 8-0 run and 53-43 advantage with 15:35 left to play.

With Campbell up 57-45 with 11:39 remaining, the Lady Hawks broke their cold streak with eight points in a row, including four more points by Finney, to pull within four 57-53. UMES followed a 6-2 Campbell run with five straight points off a Finney three and Roach pair of free throws to get within three 63-60 with 5:46 left.

UMES had a chance to tie it after a Finney steal on the next possession, but after a miss, Zene Lovette went the other way for Campbell and hit a three. An Ashley James long jumper made it 68-60 Campbell at the final media timeout.

The Lady Hawks could not get close again, and despite hitting some late free throws, UMES fell to the Lady Camels 77-72.

Finney finished with a career-high 18 points off the bench on 6-10 shooting, adding three steals. Roach, playing in her 100th game as a Lady Hawk, also had 18 points, adding five boards and three assists. Ashleigh Claybrooks (Manassas, Va.) got 10 points and five rebounds, while Shanyce Stewart (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) got nine boards and a pair of steals.

Leading the way for Campbell was Gaines, who concluded with 20 points, four assists and two steals. Baker had 17 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals, while James nearly got a double double on 12 points, eight rebounds and four blocks.

UMES will return to the UNF Arena tomorrow to take on host North Florida at 3:30 p.m. to finish up the tournament.
