PRINCESS ANNE, MD - Sophomore Kristi Veltkamp (Hudsonville Mich.) scored a career high 27 points and senior Toni Kennedy (Baltimore, Md.) tied her career high with 24, but it was not enough as Bucknell edged UMES, 93-92, in a triple overtime contest Saturday night. The Lady Hawks, fresh off a three-point overtime loss to Howard a week ago, shot 39% from the field compared to 46% by the Bison. Bucknell (4-4) held leads late in regulation and in the closing moments of the first two overtime periods, but could not hold on as UMES (1-5) tied the score each time. The Bison's largest lead of the first overtime came at 68-62, but Kennedy, who made five 3-pointers in overtime and seven in the game, connected on two in the final 30 seconds to tie the game at 68. Bucknell took a seven point advantage with less than 90 seconds left in the second overtime, but Kennedy quickly made another 3-pointer, and a driving layup by Qiana Cheatham (Baltimore, Md.) with five seconds left tied the score at 79-79 and sent the game to a third overtime. The Bison scored the first three points of the final overtime, but another 3-pointer by Kennedy and a jumper by Cheatham gave the maroon and gray an 84-82 advantage to equal their largest lead in overtime. A jumper by Kesha Champion tied the score at 89 with just over a minute to play and was part of an 8-0 run that gave the Bison a 93-89 lead. Bucknell went 15 of 19 from the charity stripe in the overtimes, compared to just 6-13 by the Lady Hawks. The Bison hit their final four free-throws in overtime to seal the win. Rachael Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn.) connected on a 3-pointer at the buzzer to make the final score 93-92. Bucknell built a 22-10 advantage early in the game before a Goodwin lay-up capped a 12-1 run for the maroon and gray. The Bison held a two point lead at the half.
The final score at the end of regulation was 58-58. The key to the game was free throw shooting. UMES made just 16 of 39, while Bucknell connected on 22 of 31. Veltkamp, who made 10 of 18 from the field, also added eight rebounds and three blocks. Kennedy had a game high five steals, while Jamila Griffith (Barbados, West Indies) pulled down a game high 12 rebounds. Cheatham finished with 10 points and seven rebounds, while Goodwin dished out nine assists. The Lady Hawks hit the road for their next contest, facing St. Francis (NY) in a non-conference decision on Wednesday, December 21. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. |
