COLLEGE PARK, Md. - UMES's offense had trouble getting going on Friday as the Lady Hawks fell to Hartford 53-38 in the first round of the Terrapin Classic at the Comcast Center. UMES falls to 4-7 while Hartford improves to 9-4.

With the defeat, UMES will take on Brown at the Comcast Center at 7 p.m. for its second game in the Terrapin Classic. Hartford will face Maryland at 4:30 p.m.

Despite the defense playing strong against its opponent, UMES did not score in the opening 10 minutes as Hartford took a 10-0 lead. With 9:47 left in the first half, Sha-Kiyla Finney (Portsmouth, Va.) hit a wing three to break the scoring drought for UMES. After a pair of Katie Roth free throws, Finney hit a layup the other way despite getting fouled to pull UMES within seven 12-5.

Down 14-5, UMES started to chip away, using a pair of Shawnee Sweeney (Colonial Heights, Va.) free throws and an Ashleigh Claybrooks (Manassas, Va.) layup to pull within five with fewer than seven minutes left in the half.

A personal run by Nikkia Smith in less than 35 seconds pushed Hartford back up by nine 20-11. UMES countered by attacking the paint, using layups by Claybrooks and Alexis Udoji (Randolph, Mass.) in succession to get back to a five-point deficit 20-15 with 4:48 left in the half.

Hartford ended in the first period on a 6-0 run to lead 26-15 at the break, adding an Alex Hall three in its opening possession in the second half to go up by 14.

Karona Roach (Bear, Del.), who did not score in the first half, netted the first four points for UMES in the second period to get UMES back within 10 by the media timeout.

For the next few minutes, UMES and Hartford went back and forth, but the Maroon and Gray could not get closer. Up 32-21, Hartford got a pair of threes in a row from Alyssa Englert and Daphne Elliott to go up 38-21 with under 12 minutes to play.

UMES got four points in a row off a Taylor Thompson (Chapel Hill, N.C.) jumper and a Finney layup, but Hartford led by 19 by the 5:47 mark. UMES earned a 6-0 run in the next two minutes, getting to within 11 with 2:44 left, but that is a close as it got, as Hartford took the 53-38 victory.

Roach earned the first double double of the season for UMES with 10 points and 11 rebounds, adding four steals, all team-highs against Hartford. Finney concluded with seven points, while Claybrooks and Sweeney each had six.

Smith concluded with 14 points off the bench for Hartford to lead the team. Elliott got 12 points, while Roth finished with five points and 10 rebounds.
