The Men's Game
The UMES men's basketball team concludes its stretch of six straight road contests with a conference match-up against the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats Monday at the Ocean Center in Daytona. The Hawks (1-10) come in on an eight-game losing streak, following a 93-68 loss at Florida A&M Saturday.

The Wildcats (5-6), one of the MEAC's biggest surprises in the early season, improved to 2-1 in conference with a 77-64 win at FAMU Thursday. UMES and Bethune played two thrilling games last season, with the Wildcats winning in Princess Anne in double-OT and the Hawks taking a 51-50 win in the MEAC Tournament.

Scouting the Wildcats
The Bethune-Cookman Wildcats (5-6, 2-1 MEAC), come into Monday's contest on a two-game winning streak, following a 13-point road conference win at Florida A&M Thursday night. The team is playing only its second home game of the season (first vs. MEAC opponent).

The Wildcats finished eighth in the MEAC regular-season standings last season and were picked eighth again in the preseason poll this year, but have been an early surprise under head fourth-year head coach Clifford Reed. Bethune began the season with a 3-1 record, then dropped five straight before beginning the current two-game win streak.

Senior forward Diondre Larmond leads Bethune in scoring (13.9 ppg) and is second in rebounding (4.1 rpg). Junior-college transfer Antonio Webb has made a big splash in his first season with the Wildcats, scoring 13.7 ppg and leading the team in assists and three-point shooting. Big man Michael Williams, replacing Pape Ba this season at center, is third in scoring (12.5 ppg) and first in boards (7.0 rpg).

The Women's Game
The UMES Lady Hawks look for their second straight MEAC road win Monday as they take on the Bethune-Cookman Lady Wildcats at the Ocean Center in Daytona, Florida. The Lady Hawks come in at 3-8 (2-1 MEAC) after snapping a three-game losing skid with an overtime victory at FAMU Saturday.

The Lady Wildcats are led by first-year head coach Francis Simmons, who took over for Sandra Booker last summer. Bethune comes into the contest 2-7 overall and 1-2 in the MEAC following an 81-47 loss at Florida A&M Thursday night, their third straight setback. Led by junior guard Katie Clark, the team has a MEAC road win at Norfolk State in addition to losses at Hampton and FAMU. The Lady Wildcats beat UMES in Princess Anne 70-61 last season Feb. 2nd.

News and Notes

The senior had started only one of the team's eight games this season (played in only four total) averaging 8.3 ppg...The Lady Hawks have been fast starters so far this season. Despite a 3-8 record, UMES has taken an early lead in 6 of its 8 losses (13-3 vs. Laf., 11-4 vs. Tow., 16-8 vs. LIU, 17-7 vs. Mia., 18-7 vs. Win., 13-8 vs. Tem). UMES then trailed at halftime of 5 of those 6 games.

Hawks Not Rattled
In a game of offensive runs, the Lady Hawks outlasted Florida A&M 71-68 in an overtime thriller Saturday in Tallahassee. The Lady Hawks withstood a furious FAMU run at the end of regulation to earn their second MEAC victory of the season.

Freshman Kristi Veltkamp had her best game in a UMES uniform, scoring a career-high 16 points, including the Lady Hawks first six points in OT. The Lady Rattlers missed two late three-point attempts that would have tied the game in the extra session, securing the victory for UMES (3-8, 2-1).

FAMU (4-8, 2-2) had offensive runs of 10-2 and two 13-0 spurts during regulation, but the Lady Hawks weathered each storm to hold a 62-55 lead with 1:22 seconds left in the second half. The Lady Rattlers then went on a miraculous 9-2 run over the next minute, including a prayer three-pointer banked in by Charon Williams that tied game and forced overtime.

UMES had runs of 15-2, 11-0 and 14-1 in regulation, led by impressive play from point guards Erica Bennett and Ashley Chase. Chase and Bennett, however, were involved in an altercation in the final minute of the second half with FAMU's Candace Crawford, that resulted in Bennett being ejected for fighting and helping the Lady Rattlers furious comeback.
