SIMON, LONG NAMED UMES PRMC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Jan. 13, 2014
PRINCESS ANNE, Md.—UMES indoor track athlete Dillon Simon (Pottersville, Dominica) and women’s basketball junior Jessica Long (Fort Washington, Md.) have been named the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Peninsula Regional Medical Center Athletes of the Week for the week ending on January 14th. This is third time both athletes have been named to this award.
Simon, a sophomore, has excelled in both the shot put and the weight throws this year. However, it is the weight throw where Dillon has toppled the school record three times over. He won last week’s AOTW award when he set the record a second time with a distance of 17.28 meters. This past Saturday at the Navy Invitational, he exceeded this mark with a distance of 17.92 meters. Currently, Simon has bested the preseason school record set by Marcus Brown by a full 1.4 meters.
Jessica Long, who has been the statistical leader of the Lady Hawks basketball team all season long, contributed her best scoring effort of the year against Norfolk State last Saturday. In thirty minutes of playing time, Long provided 29 points, shooting 8-from-15 from the floor while adding thirteen free throws from the charity stripe. She also added nine rebounds in the contest, one off her season high, as well as eight steals and six assists. In fourteen starts this year, Long leads the team in points per game at (15.3), assists (62) and steals (30).
Simon and the rest of the track team will travel to New York City for the Great Dane Classic on Friday, while the women’s basketball team will trek to Washington to face Howard this coming Saturday.
