KERR, CLAYBROOKS NAMED UMES PRMC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Jan. 21, 2014
PRINCESS ANNE, Md.—Freshmen Jared Kerr (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) and sophomore Ashleigh Claybrooks (Manassas, Va.) have been named the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Peninsula Regional Medical Center Athletes of the Week for the week ending on January 21st. Both athletes are receiving the award for the first time this year.
Kerr has come on strong in the last couple weeks to record wins in three events and earn one school record. This past week, he kept the winning tradition going as the sole UMES track athlete to finish first in his event at the Great Dane Classic in New York City. Jared posted a distance of 7.38 meters in the long jump, beating out his second place competition by .19 meters. That result not only beat out one competitor, but 28 other athletes at the Great Dane Classic. So far this season, Kerr has earned four wins in the long jump and triple jump combined, and setting the school record for triple jump at 14.65 meters.
Meanwhile, sophomore hoops star Ashleigh Claybrooks continued posting double-double performances with last Saturday’s 14 point and 14 rebound effort against Howard. The center went 5-for-12 from the floor in shooting, adding four free throws. Of the 14 rebounds, nine were of the offensive variety, with the remaining five coming on the defensive end. For Ashleigh, this is her third double-double of the season, earning her the fourth highest scoring average (7.9 PPG) and third in rebounds per game (6.9).
Jared and the rest of the men’s track team will travel to Annapolis one last time on Saturday for the Navy Invitational, while Claybrooks and the women’s basketball team will venture to the sunny shores of Daytona Beach, Fla. to play Bethune-Cookman.
