The Women's Game
The UMES Lady Hawks, tied for fourth in the MEAC, return home for a match-up with the South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs Monday at the Hytche Center. The Lady Hawks, concluding a stretch of four MEAC games in eight days, come in at 6-11 (5-4 MEAC) after a thrilling 85-75 overtime victory at N.C. A&T Saturday.

The Lady Bulldogs come in losers of five of their last six contests following a 6-5 start to the season. Led by first year head coach Tonya Mackey, a former assistant to Keshia Campbell who left last March after seven seasons (9-19 last year), S.C. State has defeated Morgan St. and Del. St in the conference. Last season UMES split two meetings with the Bulldogs.

News and Notes
PG Erica Bennett will miss Monday's game due to lingering effects of an ankle injury. The senior has missed six of the Lady Hawks' last nine games (12/20-illness, 1/10-suspension, 1/17,19,26,29-ankle). Without her, the Lady Hawks are averaging 25.2 turnovers/game (with her 22.2 TO's/gm)...Freshman Kristi Veltkamp has scored in double-figures in seven of her past nine games (12.1 ppg) after failing to score more than nine points in any of her first eight games (4.3 ppg)...Walk-on Toni Kennedy is leading the Lady Hawks in scoring (10.9 ppg). She shot 8-12 FG's at N.C. A&T after shooting a combined 5-29 FG's (17%) the previous 3 games...Octavia Thompson, the Lady Hawks leading returning scorer from `03-'04, left the team due to personal reasons after the December 6th game. The senior was averaging 8.3 ppg in four games played this season...UMES has taken an early lead in 8 of its 11 losses (13-3 vs. Laf., 11-4 vs. Tow., 16-8 vs. LIU, 17-7 vs. Mia., 18-7 vs. Win., 13-8 vs. Tem, 12-7 at Hamp., 6-0 vs. Copp.). UMES then trailed at halftime of 6 of those 8 games.

Freshmen Sensations
The Lady Hawks erased a 12-point second-half deficit and outscored N.C. A&T 14-4 in overtime in an exciting 85-75 win in Greensboro Saturday afternoon. The three UMES true freshmen- Kristi Veltcamp, Kolade Aderoju and Brittany Adkins- combined for 22 points, 18 rebounds to spark the Lady Hawks (6-11, 5-4 MEAC).

After the Lady Aggies (4-13, 3-5) led 38-37 at halftime, N.C. A&T came out of the locker room with a 16-5 run, taking a 54-42 lead with 13:25 left. The Lady Hawks responded with a 27-11 run over the next 11 minutes, thanks in large to the play of Aderoju, Veltcamp and Adkins, to grab a 69-65 lead with under two minutes to play. A runner by Shareka Glover (game-high 22 points) tied the game at 71 with 17 seconds remaining, and eventually sent the game into OT.

The Lady Hawks dominated the extra session, getting baskets from Aderoju, Adkins, Jamila Griffith, Toni Kennedy and Ashley Chase to take an 81-73 lead. UMES went 4-6 from the foul line in the final minute to ice the win. With Erica Bennett out with an ankle injury, the Chase scored a career-high 20 points and dished out six assists, while Kennedy netted a career-high-matching 21 points. Griffith grabbed a double double with 12 points and ten rebounds.

The Men's Game
The UMES men's basketball team concludes its stretch of four conference games in eight days with a home match-up against the South Carolina State Bulldogs Monday at the Hytche Center. The Hawks (1-17) come in on a 15-game losing skid following losses to Morgan State, Coppin State and N.C A&T last week.

The Bulldogs (10-9, 3-5 MEAC), picked to win the conference in the preseason poll, have lost seven of their last ten games following a 7-2 start to the season. They come into the game tied for 8th place in the MEAC standings with N.C A&T. The team, led in scoring and rebounding by Thurman Zimmerman, has wins over Penn State, Miami and Coppin State, along with an OT loss at South Carolina.

Aggie Pride
The Hawks dropped their 15th straight game overall and ninth straight in conference, falling to the N.C. A&T Aggies, 74-59 Saturday in Greensboro. UMES (1-17, 0-9 MEAC) had another solid performance from junior Tim Parham, who recorded his seventh double-double in the last nine games.

The Hawks jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, but A&T (4-15, 3-5 MEAC) responded with a 12-2 spurt to take the lead for good. The Aggies held UMES to only 24 first-half points, and led 31-24 at the break. The two teams traded baskets at the outset of the second half for six minutes, but with the score at 45-39, N.C. A&T took command, going on a 23-10 run over the next eight minutes to take their largest lead of the game at 66-47.

Sean Booker scored 16 points, 12 in the final 9:30 to pace three Aggie players in double-figures. Corey Brown was the game's co-leading scorer, notching 16 points for the Hawks. Parham had 11 points (3-11 FG's) and 11 rebounds, Anthony Davis pitched in a career-high-matching nine points, while Louis Brookins added eight off the bench.
