The Women's Game The Lady Bulldogs come in losers of five of their last six contests following a 6-5 start to the season. Led by first year head coach Tonya Mackey, a former assistant to Keshia Campbell who left last March after seven seasons (9-19 last year), S.C. State has defeated Morgan St. and Del. St in the conference. Last season UMES split two meetings with the Bulldogs. News and Notes Freshmen Sensations After the Lady Aggies (4-13, 3-5) led 38-37 at halftime, N.C. A&T came out of the locker room with a 16-5 run, taking a 54-42 lead with 13:25 left. The Lady Hawks responded with a 27-11 run over the next 11 minutes, thanks in large to the play of Aderoju, Veltcamp and Adkins, to grab a 69-65 lead with under two minutes to play. A runner by Shareka Glover (game-high 22 points) tied the game at 71 with 17 seconds remaining, and eventually sent the game into OT. The Lady Hawks dominated the extra session, getting baskets from Aderoju, Adkins, Jamila Griffith, Toni Kennedy and Ashley Chase to take an 81-73 lead. UMES went 4-6 from the foul line in the final minute to ice the win. With Erica Bennett out with an ankle injury, the Chase scored a career-high 20 points and dished out six assists, while Kennedy netted a career-high-matching 21 points. #=Eastern Michigan Eagle Classic The Men's Game The Bulldogs (10-9, 3-5 MEAC), picked to win the conference in the preseason poll, have lost seven of their last ten games following a 7-2 start to the season. They come into the game tied for 8th place in the MEAC standings with N.C A&T. The team, led in scoring and rebounding by Thurman Zimmerman, has wins over Penn State, Miami and Coppin State, along with an OT loss at South Carolina. Aggie Pride The Hawks jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, but A&T (4-15, 3-5 MEAC) responded with a 12-2 spurt to take the lead for good. The Aggies held UMES to only 24 first-half points, and led 31-24 at the break. The two teams traded baskets at the outset of the second half for six minutes, but with the score at 45-39, N.C. A&T took command, going on a 23-10 run over the next eight minutes to take their largest lead of the game at 66-47. Sean Booker scored 16 points, 12 in the final 9:30 to pace three Aggie players in double-figures. Corey Brown was the game's co-leading scorer, notching 16 points for the Hawks. Parham had 11 points (3-11 FG's) and 11 rebounds, Anthony Davis pitched in a career-high-matching nine points, while Louis Brookins added eight off the bench. UMES Hawks (1-17, 0-9 MEAC)
Upcoming Games *denotes MEAC conference game Larry Lessett- Head Coach Lessett comes to Princess Anne after working for three years as a global scout for Magic Johnson International Basketball. Prior to that he served as head coach of the Magic City Snowbears of the International Basketball Association, where he coached the team to a franchise record in wins and a playoff appearance in his only season. No stranger to the college ranks, Lessett has made several collegiate stops in his career, most recently as head basketball coach and athletic director of Hiwassee College in Madisonville, Tennessee. He has also served as an assistant coach at Mercer University, De Anza College, Georgia Southwestern College, Georgia College, Santa Barbara City College, Western New Mexico University, Loyola Marymount University and Cal State University Northridge. Lessett received a Bachelors degree in Physical Education from Cal State Northridge in 1983 and a Masters degree in Phys Ed and Health from Georgia College in 1991. Assistant Coaches Meredith Smith- Assistant Coach Smith became head coach of Southern High School in Baltimore City in 1978, a position he then held for 24 seasons. In that time he compiled a 414-145 record, giving him the second most victories in Baltimore City Public School history. Smith won 25 playoff games, including three Maryland State Championships (MPSSAA), two Maryland Scholastic Association Conference Championships and a Baltimore City Championship in 1999-2000. In 1993 the Baltimore Sun named Smith their "Coach of the Year." Smith holds a Bachelors degree in Secondary and Physical Education from UMES and a Master's degree from Coppin State University. Carl Thomas- Assistant Coach While Thomas is holding his first coaching position, he has been in collegiate and professional basketball for almost two decades as a player. A former standout at Eastern Michigan University (1987-'91), Thomas spent much of his professional career in the Continental Basketball Association. He holds the career CBA record for the most times called up to the NBA (5). Thomas played 68 games over three seasons in the NBA, including stints with the Sacramento Kings (1992), Cleveland Cavaliers (`97 + `98), Golden State Warriors (`98) and Orlando Magic (`98). He averaged 2.9 ppg.
