PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women’s basketball team looks to build momentum as they take on the top-two teams in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) standings. Tomorrow (02/08), the Lady Hawks conclude their four-game home-stand as they host Coppin State University (CSU). Game-time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. (EST) Two days later (02/10); Maryland Eastern Shore hits the road to Hampton, Va. to square off against the Lady Pirates of Hampton University. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m. (EST)

LAST TIMEOUT

The Lady Hawks picked up their first conference win of the season as they knocked off the Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University (NCCU), 72-57. In the second half, the Lady Eagles narrowed the gap as low as 12-points, but Maryland Eastern Shore constantly responded and grew the lead as much as 18-points, 65-47, with nearly four-and-a-half left in regulation. NCCU made a late run, but UMES was able to hit their free-throws down the stretch to pick their first MEAC victory of the season.

TOP PERFORMERS

Sophomore forward Ashleigh Claybrooks (Manassas, Va.) provided the low-post presence for the Lady Hawks as she ended her night with 16 points and 10 boards while sophomore forward/center Alexis Udoji (Randolph, Mass.) filled the stat sheet, recording 11 points, seven rebounds, and a career-high seven assists.

Other notable Hawk performances included Jessica Long (Fort Washington, N.C.) registering 14 points and five dimes whereas Taryana Kelly (North Brunswick, N.J.) and Shawnee Sweeney (Chester, Va.) combined for 17 points and 10 boards in the victory.

MATCHUP PREVIEWS

Entering Saturday’s contest, CSU leads the all-time series, 33-23, dating back to the 1985-86 season. Last season, the Eagles swept the season-series, 2-0. In the first match-up (02/18/13), the Lady Hawks fell, 55-50, inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. In that contest, Udoji notched nine points and nine boards in a losing effort. In the re-match (03/04/13), the Eagles propelled, 69-60, at the Physical Education Complex (Baltimore, Md.) where Sha-Kiyla Finney had a team-high 16 points while Udoji and Claybrooks each recorded 12 points in the loss.

This season, Coppin State enters 10-11 overall (7-2 MEAC), led by Kyra Coleman and Larrisa Carter. Coleman, a member of the 2013-14 MEAC Preseason First Team, leads the team in scoring, averaging 14.9 points-per-game, which is eleventh in the MEAC. Two days later (02/10), the Lady Hawks hit the road as they take on Hampton University inside HU Convocation Center. Dating back to the 1982-83 season, Hampton leads the all-time series, 33-6. Last season, the Lady Pirates defeated UMES, 78-47, at the Hytche Athletic Center. Karona Roach led the Hawk attack, posting 14 points and three assists, while Claybrooks and Sweeney combined for 21 points in a losing effort.

Prior to tomorrow’s clash with Howard, the Lady Pirates come in 18-4 (9-0 MEAC) on the season, led by their big three; Malia Tate-DeFritas, Alyssa Bennett, and Nicole Hamilton. Prior to the season, Bennett and Hamilton were named 2013-14 MEAC Preseason First Team whereas Tate-DeFritas leads the team in scoring, averaging 19.3 points-per-game.

For the Lady Hawks, Long and Sweeney are the top-two scorers for UMES, combining for over 26-points-per-game, while Claybrooks and Udoji control the paint, grabbing over 14-rebounds-per-game among the two of them. UPCOMING SCHEDULE

After Monday’s game, the Lady Hawks return to the Hytche Athletic Center where they will host the Lady Bison of Howard University on Feb. 15th, followed by Morgan State University on Feb. 17th. Game-times are 2:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. (EST), respectively.
