PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shores' (UMES) April McBride and Chena Parker were named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player and Rookie of the Week respectively for their efforts against Norfolk State University (NSU) and Florida A&M University (FAMU) the week ending February 24, the conference announced Monday. McBride (Forward, 6-1, So., New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle H.S.) led the Lady Hawks to two consecutive victories this past week as she averaged a double-double of 21.5 points and 12 rebounds on 58 percent shooting from the floor (18-of-31) and 50 percent shooting from downtown (3-of-6). McBride picked up her 10th double-double of the season against NSU, finishing with 16 points and 13 rebounds to go along with a game-high five assists and three steals in the 84-65 win. She then posted her 11th double-double of the season with 27 points and 11 rebounds in the homecoming victory over FAMU, 74-54. She also added three assists and three steals, while the 27 points matched her career-high.
Parker (Center, 6-3, Fr., Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Manhattan Center for Science and Math) combined for 13 points, 9.5 rebounds, and two steals on 86 percent shooting from the field (12-of-14) in two victories last week for the Lady Hawks. In the win against NSU Parker was perfect from the floor (4-of-4) and finished with eight points, six rebounds, and two steals in just 18 minutes of action. Parker collected the first double-double of her collegiate career with 18 points and a personal best 13 rebounds as UMES rolled to their fourth win in their last six attempts on homecoming against FAMU. This is the third time McBride has won the award this season, while Parker claimed the honor for her second time. The MEAC announced Lamona Smalley of North Carolina A&T as Defensive Player of the Week. UMES will host Bethune-Cookman tonight in the William P.
