PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Seniors Kwinnyata Mercer (Mt. Vernon, N.Y.) and James Newsome (Mechanicsville, Va.) have been named the Peninsula Regional Medical Center University of Maryland Eastern Shore Athletes of the Week for the week of Feb. 27. This is the first time this season that either student-athlete has been distinguished with the award.

Mercer led the UMES women’s basketball team to a 1-1 record this past week, as she averaged 18 ppg across two contests. The senior began the week with 12 points and two steals in the Hawks’ 62-49 loss at Howard, before she reeled off a career-high 24 points against Morgan State on Saturday. Mercer was efficient from long-range in both contests, where she combined to go 9-for-17.

Mercer led UMES in scoring in both games this week and has been the leading scorer in each of the Hawks’ past four games.

Newsome was the top performer for UMES’ baseball team this past week as he was 5-for-15 with three runs, two RBIs and two doubles in four contests. He hit safely in three of UMES’ four games. His week was highlighted by a 2-for-3 performance against Illinois State, where he finished with one double, one RBI and one run.

The Mechanicsville, Va., product leads the Hawks with four doubles and 13 total bases this season. His fine performance has been seen on defense as well, where he has recorded nine assists in seven games at third base.

The women’s basketball team resumes play in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference on Monday, Feb. 27, when the Hawks take on Coppin State University at 5:30 p.m. The baseball team is next in action on Wednesday, Feb. 29, when the Hawks open their home schedule with a double-header against Lehigh University at 12 and 3 p.m.
