The Women's Game
The #7 UMES Lady Hawks open conference tournament play with a match-up against #10 North Carolina A&T at the Arthur Ashe Center Monday afternoon. The Lady Hawks ended the regular season with victories in five of their last seven games to move up three positions in the standings following a 2-10 start in MEAC play.

UMES, who beat Morgan State 78-62 on March 1st to end the regular season, split two games against N.C. A&T in the regular season. The Lady Aggies started the conference season at 3-3, but then lost their next 11 games. N.C. A&T finally broke that losing streak Saturday with a 64-60 win at South Carolina State.

News and Notes
During the Lady Hawks' final seven regular season games (5-2 record), the team was on fire offensively. UMES averaged 79 ppg (551 total) during the seven games, and their five wins came by an average margin of victory of 25 points. During the streak, UMES outscored its opponents 294-228 in the second half....In spite of the Lady Hawks' 6-12 conference record, nine of the team's 12 MEAC losses came by 9 points or fewer. The team has led in the second half in 8 of those 12 losses...After a slow start to the season, UMES guard Laconia Hatcher caught fire. Hatcher, who failed to score double-figures in any of the first five games this season, scored in double-figures in 18 of the 22 games the rest of the way, and is now the Lady Hawks' second-leading scorer at 12.8 ppg....Tiffany Winkfield finished the regular season with 14 double-double's in 25 games played. The senior, who was named a first-team all-MEAC selection, is leading UMES with both 14.1 ppg and 10.7 rpg (also leads the MEAC)....The Lady Hawks have been a second-half team in '03-'04. Despite the team's losing record, UMES has out-scored its opponents 1003-930 in the second half this season.

Meetings This Season...
UMES and North Carolina A&T split two earlier meetings this season. On January 10th in Greensboro, Camille Akins turned in 24 points and 12 rebounds to lead N.C. A&T (5-8, 2-2 MEAC) to a 68-61 victory at Corbett Sports Center. UMES had a 61-40 rebounding edge, but could not overcome 32 turnovers that led to 30 N.C. A&T points.

Akins broke open a close game by scoring eight points during a decisive 11-0 A&T run late in the second half, ending with the Lady Aggies in front 59-44 with 3:11 to play. The Lady Hawks came within six on two occasions in the final minutes, but N.C. A&T made 7-11 foul shots down the stretch to secure their fourth victory in five games. The win proved costly for N.C. A&T, as point guard and then-leading scorer Shareka Glover went down with an injury in the second half and was lost for the season.

February 14th in Princess Anne, the Lady Hawks got revenge in convincing fashion, beating the Lady Aggies 83-49. The 34-point win was UMES' second-largest margin of victory all season.

A&T (6-17, 3-10 MEAC) hung in the game early, and held its final lead of the contest at 26-25 with 6:46 remaining in before halftime. UMES (8-14, 3-10 MEAC) took control from there however, going on one of the most dominating runs of the season. During the next 18:20 of game action, the Lady Hawks went on a 42-7 run, building a 67-33 advantage when it was said and done. Octavia Thompson led the Lady Hawks with 16 points, going a perfect 6-6 from the field. Tia Richardson led the Lady Aggies, who played with only six players in uniform, with 17 points with seven rebounds.
