PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women’s basketball junior guard Jessica Long (Fort Washington, Md.) was named to the College Sports Madness 2013-14 MEAC All-Conference Fourth Team, the announcement came today. With this honor, Long becomes the fourth Lady Hawk this season to receive recognition, joining Ashleigh Claybrooks (Manassas, Va.), Mariah McCoy (Rock Hill, S.C.) and Alexis Udoji (Randolph, Mass.).

Throughout the season, Long has provided energy on both ends of the court as she leads the team in multiple categories, including points (14.4), assists (4.3), and steals (1.9). She eclipsed 20+ points in a single-game on six separate occasions this season, including a career-high 29 points versus Norfolk State University (NSU) back on Jan. 11th. In that same game, Long registered eight steals, which is the most steals in a single game by any Lady Hawk since the 2005-06 season. On Nov. 26, 2013, Long notched her first career double-double, 24 points and 10 boards, in the home victory over Lincoln (Pa.) University.

Other notable mentions included Jasmine Grice (Florida A&M) winning the College Sports Madness 2013-14 MEAC Player of the Year while Malia Tate-DeFreitas (Hampton) earning College Sports Madness 2013-14 MEAC Freshman of the Year. Hampton University’s women’s basketball head coach David Six was recognized as the College Sports Madness 2013-14 MEAC Coach of the Year. The College Sports Madness staff picked the top women’s basketball players from each conference and these players have made significant contributions to their teams during this past season and deserved significant recognition.

This Monday (03/10), the women’s basketball team opens the 2013-14 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament against Norfolk State inside the Norfolk Scope Arena, locate in Norfolk Va. Game-time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. (EST)
