Richmond, Va. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore's (UMES) most recent entry into the honor roll known as the All-MEAC Women's Basketball Rookie Team is a young lady who Head Coach Fred Batchelor thinks he can build a program on. Kristi Veltkamp was the only UMES player on the men or women's teams to be recognized with any selection.

"Kristi is the type of young lady who is a great team player, she does what is asked, works hard, is developing into a great player, and someone who cares enough to constantly work on her game. It is a true pleasure to have her as a member of our program," said Batchelor.

It was announced on Tuesday, March 8, 2005, that Veltkamp had been selected to the All-Rookie Team by MEAC Director of Media Relations Michelle Jinks at the annual tournament banquet.

"It's great to be named to the team. I am glad that I can be a part of the UMES program and contribute. I feel it's an honor to be selected," said Veltkamp.

Veltkamp is averaging 8.6 points per game this season, 9.5 in MEAC games. She also is averaging 4.4 rebounds per game. "She has had a very good freshman season," said Batchelor. For a freshman, someone who by height is a center, but can play other positions, she has made a nice transition to the Division I game," he added.

The last player UMES had selected to the All-Rookie Team was Octavia Thompson in 2001-2002. She began her senior season with the Lady Hawks this year but left the team for personal reasons.

The rest of the team included: Rachel Butler, who was also named Rookie of the Year, guards Rashida Suber (Coppin State), Laquita Ball (South Carolina State) and forward Raquel Collier (Delaware State).

UMES is currently in Richmond, Va. at the MEAC Basketball Tournament as the number five seed. They play Thursday, March, 10, 2005 against the four seed, Howard Lady Bison, at noon.
