The Women's Game
The #7 UMES Lady Hawks continue conference tournament play with a match-up against #2 Hampton at the Richmond Coliseum Wednesday afternoon. Dating back to the regular season, the Lady Hawks have won six of their last eight games following a 2-10 start in MEAC play.

UMES, who beat North Carolina A&T in the first round Monday, lost two games in the regular season to the defending MEAC-champion Lady Pirates. Hampton shared the regular-season championship this season with Delaware State after compiling a 14-4 conference record. The Lady Pirates have won nine straight games coming into the MEAC Tournament.

News and Notes
During the Lady Hawks' last eight games (6-2 record), the team has been on fire offensively. UMES is averaging 79 ppg (630 total) during the eight games, and their six wins have come by an average margin of victory of 24 points. During the streak, UMES has outscored its opponents 337-255 in the second half....In spite of the Lady Hawks' 6-12 conference record, nine of the team's 12 MEAC losses came by 9 points or fewer. The team has led in the second half in 8 of those 12 losses...After a slow start to the season, UMES guard Laconia Hatcher caught fire. Hatcher, who failed to score double-figures in any of the first five games this season, has scored in double-figures in 19 of the 23 games the rest of the way, and is now the Lady Hawks' second-leading scorer at 13.0 ppg....Tiffany Winkfield, who scored a career-high 31 points to go along with 13 rebounds Monday, now has 15 double-double's in 26 games played this season. The senior, who was named a first-team all-MEAC selection, is leading UMES with both 14.7 ppg and 10.8 rpg (also leads the MEAC)....The Lady Hawks have been a second-half team in '03-'04. Despite the team's losing record, UMES has out-scored its opponents 1046-947 in the second half this season.

Meetings This Season...
UMES lost both regular-season meetings with Hampton this season. On January 19th, Brendy Ellis' baseline jumper with four seconds to play gave Hampton a come-from-behind 60-59 victory over visiting UMES. Following Ellis' basket, Erica Bennett of the Lady Hawks (3-9, 1-5 MEAC) missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 1.2 seconds to play to end the game.

Ellis' shot capped a remarkable comeback by the Lady Pirates (4-10, 4-2 MEAC) who trailed by 11 points with 10 minutes to play. After that point, however, the Lady Hawks fell into an offensive drought, and Hampton held UMES scoreless over the next seven minutes during an 11-0 run that knotted the game 51-51 with 3:42 remaining. The lead changed hands five times in the final 2:18, and the Lady Hawks went ahead for the final time at 59-58 on a lay-up by Tiffany Winkfield with 29 seconds on the clock.

Winkfield was a monster in the losing effort for UMES, scoring 16 of her game-high 24 points (14 rebounds) in the second half. The missed free-throw by Bennett overshadowed her heroics, and the Lady Hawks upset bid fell just short.

It was an easier victory on February 23rd in Princess Anne for Hampton, as the Lady Pirates spoiled UMES' Senior Night with an 82-62 blowout victory. The loss ended a four-game winning streak for the Lady Hawks, and was the sixth straight win for Hampton.

UMES lead the Lady Pirates 24-15 in the first ten minutes of the game, and later by as many as 12 points on two occasions, but Hampton went on a 20-6 run to take a four-point lead at the end of the first half. Within the first ten minutes of the second half, the Lady Pirates went on a 24-7 run and never looked back after that.
