WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - It has been a long road to fourth place in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's basketball team. April McBride (New Rochelle, N.Y.) has led the team for most the ride and the MEAC recognized her efforts Monday night at the Tournament Tip-Off Banquet when she was named to the All-Conference First Team for the second consecutive year. "It's great," said Head Coach Fred Batchelor. "It's really appropriate for the work she has put in." McBride leads the team in points (395) and rebounds (212) this season. She averages 16.5 points per game and is shooting an amazing 78.8 percent from the free throw line. "It's an honor," said McBride, who has 1,173 career points. This season, she has recorded 10 double-doubles and finished 10 games with 20 plus points. The Lady Hawks face Morgan State next on March 12 at 2:30p.m. in the quarterfinals of the tournament. Coach Batchelor believes they have a "great challenge" ahead of them. This will be the third meeting for the rivals, and UMES has topped the Lady Bears twice already this season. "It's hard beating a team three times," said McBride. In their last meeting, she recorded a double-double, putting up a career-high 29 points and 11 rebounds.
The Lady Hawks will look to her to help lead them to their first post season win in three years.
