July 10, 2007 PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Women's Basketball program and Head Coach Fred Batchelor rounded out their 2007-2008 squad getting a commitment from Bria Jackson (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta H.S.) a 5-3 point guard who averaged 15 points and a team-high 7.5 assists last season for Rush-Hernrietta (R-H). Jackson helped lead the way for a team that won consecutive state public high school championships the past two years. R-H won a fourth straight Section V title and repeated as Class AA state champion. She is a two-time All-Greater Rochester selection and named seventh team all-state for New York, a state known for great high school hoops. Jackson joins Chena Parker (Poughkeepsie, NY/Mahattanville Ctr.) as another signee this season from New York. That makes four Lady Hawks from the Empire State including April McBride (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle H.S.), an All-MEAC Rookie Team performer last season is and Jessica Ayilola (Brooklyn, NY/Robert Morris Univ./Boys & Girls HS) who sat out last year after transferring from Robert Morris University. The signing of Jackson helps sure up a backcourt that will be dominated by newcomers as Danielle Cooper and Jaquese Smith did not return. Casey Morton (Mardela Springs, MD/ Mardela HS), Talareah Frazier (Gaithersburg, MD/Gaithersburg HS), Queenique Taylor (Ft. Washington, MD/Potomac HS) and Jackson are all expected to compete for the time at the point. "To get a player of Bria Jackson's caliber is a big signing for us," said Head Coach Fred Batchelor. "We know she can contribute and we know she can put people in a position to score, as well as score herself. We are very excited to add her; she is a proven winner." According to a newspaper story in the Democrat & Chronicle, teams from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference as well as the Big East were interested in Jackson who tallied 1,007 career points at R-H. She set school records for career assists, steals and three-points. Her teammate at R-H and on the club program the Empire Dragons, Eva Riddick, signed to play at the University of Delaware, a team the UMES is slated to face this season.
