UMES ATHLETICS TOP MOMENT #12: UMES CLAIMS FIFTH STRAIGHT MEAC GSR TITLE
Aug. 14, 2014
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) athletics department countdown continues with their fifth straight Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Graduation Success Rate (GSR) Title. UMES was recognized by the MEAC for having the league's highest GSR for the fifth consecutive year, earning an 89-percent GSR for student-athletes that competed from 2003 to 2006.
“It is a great honor to win this award for the fifth straight athletic season," said UMES athletic director Keith Davidson. "It shows how successful our athletic program has truly been. The graduation success of our student-athletes has shown the quality of people that we are recruiting and that the university is doing its part in preparing student-athletes for life after college."
In March, the Hawks were ranked No. 1 out of all Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) men’s basketball teams while the Lady Hawks were tied for seventh among HBCU women’s basketball schools for graduation success rate.
In May, the conference acknowledged 66 UMES student-athletes by naming them to the 2014 MEAC Commissioner’s All-Academic Team. These athletes retain a 3.0 GPA or better during their respective sport.
In June, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) recognized the men’s tennis team on their Academic Progress Rate (APR). The squad finished in the top 10 percent of teams with the highest APR.
