"Magic" Ashley re-joins the women's basketball team after a successful year off

Aug. 18, 2009

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Fred Batchelor, women's basketball Head Coach, is pleased to announce the re-hiring of Richard "Magic" Ashley as the Graduate Assistant Coach.

Ashley, a native of New Castle, Del. and 2008 graduate of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, previously worked with the team from 2006 to 2008 as a Student Assistant Head Coach for women's basketball and an Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach.

In his two years with the women's basketball team, they had a record of 28-33 (17-17 MEAC).

His one-year time away from the UMES Athletic Department was a very successful one as he helped lead the William Penn High School varsity boy's basketball team to a State Championship as First Assistant Head Coach.

The women's basketball team will also benefit from Ashley's coaching experience with the AAU (PAL All-Stars) as he helps the head coach with travel arrangements in addition to attending practices and traveling with the team throughout the east coast.
