PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Fred Batchelor, women's basketball head coach, is proud to release the names of the four new Lady Hawks for the upcoming 2009-10 athletic year.

Sha-Kiyla Finney, a native of Portsmouth, Va., is a 5'7" freshman point guard from Woodrow Wilson High School. Finney, who reached the 1,000 point mark in her high school career, is described as a high energy guard with exceptional basketball instincts.

"We will be looking for Sha-Kiyla to help develop a back court that puts an extreme amount of pressure on opposing perimeter players," said Batchelor.

Karona Roach, a native of Bear, Del., is a 5'8" freshman power guard from Caravel Academy. Coach Batchelor sees her as a player that is very strong, tough and crafty and always finds a way to be effective, no matter what her position.

"Karona's ability to create her own shot and consistently knock down the mid-range jumper puts her in the category of an old school throwback guard," stated Batchelor.

Alicia Green, a native of Columbia, S.C., is a 6'4" junior transfer from Spartanburg Methodist College. As a center, she will add depth and experience to the current post play.

"Her recent college experience and success will assist her in making an immediate contribution to our program," declared Batcheor.

Latoya Buckner, a native of Washington, D.C., is a 6'0" junior transfer from Hagerstown Community College. A guard, Buckner is believed to be the steal of the class. She will bring immediate help to consistently hitting the three-point shot and scored a career high 29 points against Garrett Community College in 2008.

"Latoya is very athletic and versatile, which will allow us to use her in a variety of ways," said Batchelor. "She will assist us in our ability to press and trap on the defensive end."

In addition to the four new Hawks, the squad will also see last season's inactive players, Krystal Watson and Chelsea Sanders, return to the playing roster.

Watson, a native of Buffalo, N.Y., is a 6'0" medial-redshirt freshman who, as a prep center, had a career high of 27 points. She also helped lead the Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart team to a 2006 League Championship and was a two-time First Team All-League player.

"Krystal will give us added depth in the post," remarked Batchelor. "She is extremely strong and a very intelligent basketball player. Her ability to be a physical presence in the paint along with a consistent mid-range jumper will create minutes for her on the floor."

Sanders, a native of Rochester, N.Y., is a 6'1" redshirt freshman from Edison Tech High School.

"Chelsea is a do-it-all type player," commented Batchelor. "Her ability to rebound the ball and start the fast break may be her biggest asset."

Look for these six new players and their teammates when they host an exhibition contest on November 10th at 6:00 p.m. The opponent will be a great one for local sports fans as Salisbury University comes to the William P. Hytche Center for the second time. They last took on UMES to open the 2006-07 season with UMES getting a 75-34 win.
