WOMEN'S BASKETBALL WELCOMES JASMINE BLANTON TO COACHING STAFF
Sep 3, 2013
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's basketball team is pleased to announce that Jasmine Blanton has been named an assistant coach, it was announced today. Blanton will fulfill the role of the graduate assistant for the team as the third assistant for Head Coach Fred Batchelor. Blanton joins assistant coaches Cedric Jenkins and Revonda Whitley on the UMES roster.
Blanton brings a plethora of playing experience to the Hawks' coaching staff this season. Last year, she was named to the All-West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference First Team after leading West Virginia State with an average of 18.0 points-per-game. She guided WVSU to a sixth-place finish in the conference, which proved to be the best final standing for the team in the past decade. She was also named a WVIAC Honorable Mention selection as a junior.
Before arriving at WVSU, Blanton played two seasons at Owens Community College in Toledo, Ohio. She was the third leading scorer in the history of the program and guided the team to a conference championship in 2011. The team captain won a national player of the week honor and was selected as the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Year two years ago.
Blanton also brings some coaching experience with her as well. She was an assistant coach for an AAU women's basketball team during the summer of 2011, where she developed guards and assisted with the day-to-day responsibilities of the head coach. She helped with the WVSU Women's Basketball Summer Camp in 2012 and assisted with the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club as well.
She looks to help UMES build on its 8-20 season in 2012-13, where the Lady Hawks fell in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference quarterfinals. The women are set to begin their season at the beginning of November.
