UMES WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ANNOUNCES 2012-13 SCHEDULE
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- University of Maryland Eastern Shore head women's basketball coach Fred Batchelor has released the 2012-13 schedule. The Lady Hawks are set for a 27-game regular season schedule, including a full Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference slate. UMES is playing 14 times at the Hytche Athletic Center this season.
The season begins with an exhibition contest at home against Wilmington University on Wednesday, November 7th at 6 p.m.
UMES will hit the road for the first game of the year, heading to Fairfax, Virginia to take on George Mason on Tuesday, November 13th.
The Lady Hawks then return home for a pair of games in Princess Anne. They will open at home against Batchelor's former team, Elizabeth City State, on Saturday, November 17th at 6 p.m. Then on Tuesday, November 20th, UMES welcomes in Old Dominion for a 6 p.m. game.
MEAC play begins on Saturday, December 1st as UMES heads up Route 13 to Dover, to take on archrival Delaware State at 2 p.m.
The Lady Hawks will return to non-conference action, playing a pair of in-state opponents. Heading to the western part of the home state, the squad takes on Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg on Wednesday, December 5th. Then that Saturday, December 8th, UMES returns to the Hytche to face Towson at 2 p.m.
From December 14th through the 15th, UMES will play in the first of two non-conference tournaments, flying to Jacksonville, Florida for the Osprey Holiday Classic. Participants for the event include tournament host North Florida, Campbell and Jacksonville State. UMES's opponents are to be announced, and game times for each day will be either 1 p.m. or 3:30 p.m.
Batchelor's team comes back to the Hytche for the final two non-conference home games, taking on American on Tuesday, December 18th at 6 p.m. and UMBC on Friday, December 21st at 2 p.m.
As the calendar year comes to a close, UMES will play in the Terrapin Classic in College Park, Maryland. The Lady Hawks will tip off against Hartford at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, December 28th. The next day, UMES will face either tournament host Maryland or Brown at either 4:30 p.m. or 7 p.m.
The team will take a break until January 12th, when conference play will resume. Norfolk State comes to the Hytche for a 2 p.m. game on Saturday, January 12th. The following Saturday, January 19th, UMES will rematch against Delaware State at 2 p.m. at home.
The Hawks then return to the Sunshine State for a pair of MEAC games. On Saturday, January 26th, the Lady Hawks play Florida A&M in Tallahassee at 2 p.m. Then UMES heads southeast to Daytona Beach for a game against Bethune-Cookman on Monday, January 28th at 5:30 p.m.
Returning home for a pair of games, UMES will face the two MEAC schools from North Carolina. The Lady Hawks will have a showdown with North Carolina A&T on Saturday, February 2nd at 2 p.m., followed by a 5:30 p.m. game on Monday, February 4th against North Carolina Central.
The Maroon and Gray will play a couple of local rivals on the road the next weekend. The team heads to the nation's capital to face Howard for a 2 p.m. game on Saturday, February 9th. Then on Monday, February 11th, UMES heads across the Bay Bridge-Tunnel for a second game against Norfolk State set for 5:30 p.m.
UMES will finish out the home schedule with four straight contests in Princess Anne. Homecoming is set for Saturday, February 16th as the Lady Hawks host Morgan State at 2 p.m. On Monday, February 18th, UMES takes on Coppin State at 5:30 p.m. Then on the final home weekend, UMES hosts defending MEAC Champion Hampton on Saturday, February 23rd at 2 p.m. Senior Day is set for Monday, February 25th at 5:30 p.m. as the Lady Hawks play Howard for the final home game of the season.
The team heads across the Bay Bridge to take on its in-state MEAC rivals in Baltimore in the first weekend of March. UMES first plays Morgan State on Saturday, March 2nd at 2 p.m., then has a game against Coppin State on Monday, March 4th at 5:30 p.m.
Conference play wraps up on Thursday, March 7th as the Lady Hawks go down to Georgia to play Savannah State, with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m.
UMES will suit up for the MEAC Tournament starting on March 11th, playing in a new venue this season, the Norfolk Scope Arena in Norfolk, Virginia.
The season will kick off with Hawk Hysteria on Friday, October 19th at the Hytche Athletic Center.
