UMES BEGINS ROAD TRIP AGAINST EAGLES

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Tomorrow (11/12), the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women’s Basketball Team begins their three-game road trip in our Nation’s Capital, Washington, DC, as they face the Eagles of American University at Bender Arena. Tip-off is 7:00 p.m.

LAST GAME

The Lady Hawks opened the season against South Carolina-Upstate (USC-Upstate) at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center and lost a tough game, 87-83, to the Spartans.

After trailing 50-40 at halftime, the Lady Hawks rallied and took the lead, 72-71, with just under eight minutes remaining. With less than one minute remaining, the Lady Hawks held a one point lead, 83-82. USC-Upstate would retake the lead late and win the game, 87-83. With the loss, UMES dropped to 0-1 overall in the young season.

TOP PERFORMERS

In that game, four Lady Hawks scored double-digit points, led by guards Jessica Long (Fort Washington, MD) and TeAmber Burke (Washington, NC). Long and Burke each tallied 17 points while Shawnee Sweeney (Chester, VA) recorded 16 points. Ashleigh Claybrooks (Manassas, VA) added 12 points and grabbed six boards. Senior Shanyce Stewart (Mount Vernon, NY) paced all rebounders with a game-high 13 rebounds and Alexis Udoji (Randolph, MA) pulled down 11 boards.


 

 

MATCHUP PREVIEW

American leads the all-time series, 12-5, over the Lady Hawks, including last season’s 61-53 victory. For American, this is the Eagles first game of the 2013-14 campaign. Last season, American finished 15-14 overall (8-6 Patriot League). The Eagles return four starters, including senior Alexis Dobbs. A year ago, Dobbs averaged 11.0 points-per-game in 32.5 minutes-per-contest, which led the team in both categories.

For UMES, this is their second game of the young season and first road test. Last game, the Lady Hawks put up 83 points, led by the trio guard attack of Burke, Long, and Sweeney. The three players combined for 50 of the 83 points.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE

After Tuesday night’s game, the team travels to Baltimore, MD to square off against the University of Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC). Game time is 1:00 p.m.
