The Game
The UMES Lady Hawks play only their second game in three weeks as they travel to Philadelphia for a match-up with the Temple Owls Thursday at the Liacouras Center. The Lady Hawks come in at 2-7 after consecutive losses against Howard and Bucknell.

The Owls, coached by women's basketball legend Dawn Staley, come into the non-conference contest at 6-3 and riding a three-game win streak. Temple is in a stretch of playing four out of five games at home, where they are 3-1 so far this season. The team has played some tough competition thus far, having lost to then-#2 LSU by 14 and then-#1 Tennessee by 4. Temple won the A-10 Conference title last season, its second championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in three seasons.

News and Notes
Octavia Thompson, the Lady Hawks leading returning scorer from last season, left the team due to personal reasons after the December 6th game. The senior had started only one of the team's eight games this season, and played in only four total, averaging 8.3 ppg...The Lady Hawks have been fast starters so far this season. Despite a 2-7 record, UMES has taken a big early lead in 5 of its 9 games (13-3 vs. Laf., 11-4 vs. Tow., 16-8 vs. LIU, 17-7 vs. Mia., 18-7 vs. Win.). UMES then trailed at halftime of 4 of those 5 games...UMES is averaging 56 points per game over the first nine games of the regular season. The team scored 90 points in its only exhibition game, a win over Wilmington College.

Bison Battle- Part II
In their first action in two weeks, the Lady Hawks fell to the Bucknell Bison, 60-48, in a non-conference game in December 20th. Led by freshman Kristi Veltkamp's career-high 10 points and six block shots, UMES dropped its second straight game.

The Lady Hawks (2-7) fell behind 8-0 in the first three minutes of the game and were never able to pull closer than seven points as Bucknell (3-6) held UMES to only 25% shooting on the night. UMES committed 26 turnovers and shot only 15-29 from the free-throw line, helping to prevent the Lady Hawks from getting back into the game.

Bucknell outscored UMES 23-13 off of turnovers guiding the way to a 30-17 lead at the half. In the second half, UMES outscored the Bison 31-30, but the 13-point halftime deficit was too much to overcome. UMES trailed by as many as 15 points at three separate times throughout the game, but twice were able to pull back to within seven points.

The Bison won despite 39% shooting from the field. Hope Foster and Lindsey Hollobaugh scored in double-figures with 12 and 11 points respectively for Bucknell.
