Dover, Del. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Bowling Team picked up seven more wins and came home in second place at the 2007 Capital Classic held this past weekend in Dover, Delaware. The Lady Hawks lost in the championship round of the Classic to defending National Champion Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) three games to two. The heartbreaker was game four where UMES fell 187-185 with a two game lead. "It's ok," said Head Coach Sharon Brummell. "We bowled well this weekend and picked up two wins against New Jersey City (NJCU), a team we hadn't been able to beat this season." UMES opened the event in team games with a loss to Sacred Heart (951-916) but rebounded to take down NJCU 977-799, the nation's third ranked team. They also defeated St. Peter's College (854-821) and St. Francis University (938-616) on the day. They fell to FDU on opening day 1088-930. On day two of the event UMES toppled Adelphi (942-837) and Cheyney (861-596) in head to head matches. Those head to head matches seeded the teams and UMES, seeded second, met Bowie State in the opening round to win 760-670 in a Baker match and then knocked off NJCU again, this time in a Baker match, 748-682. That set-up the finals against the Knights of FDU where UMES took games one and three before falling in the final two games of the best three of five format. Michelle Wallace was the standout for the Lady Hawks, earning All-Tournament Team honors and finishing third individually for pin fall with a 200.57 average. FDU took the top two spots with 204 averages. Jessica Worsley was ninth overall with a 183.43 average while Laura Zanrucha was 11th with a 181.33 in her first tournament back. Wallace rolled the fifth highest total of the season with a 248 in game two against NJCU. Other 200 games came from Wallace (248, 211, 225), Worsley (209), Marion Singleton (201, twice), Megan Raymond (205) and Zanrcuha (210, 206).
UMES heads to the Morgan State Invitational this weekend where they will see more of the nation's top teams including Central Missouri, Nebraska, Vanderbilt, FDU and NJCU. "It should be a good test," said Brummell. "I think the team is looking forward to it." |
