DOVER, Del. - The Lady Hawk bowlers have been on fire as of late, coming off a championship at the NCAA Mid-Winter Classic and this past weekend posting a 9-1 record at the Capital Classic and knocking down the most pins in the event. UMES took second place overall in the event which featured bracket play as they lost to Farleigh Dickinson (FDU) four games to two in the finals with a difference of one pin, 1231-1230. "We still bowled really well," said Head Coach Sharon Brummell. "I am proud of these young ladies, we knocked down the most pins and improved our record with a 9-1 mark against a good field of teams." UMES improves to 87-20 overall after the weekend. They went 5-0 in team games with victories over host #10 Delaware State (DSU), (1116-1022), #16 Wisconsin-Whitewater (1021-902), Howard (991-789), Morgan State (1153-853) and Cheyney (906-535). The Hawks combined for a whopping 15 games over 200, 10 more than under 200. Kristina Frahm was the lead bird on the day as she posted four games out of five over 200 for 1,093 total pins and an average of 218.6, the second best at the event. She rolled a 234, 215, 225, 237 and 182 in that order. Not far behind was All-American Laura Zanrucha who, along with Frahm, was named to the All-Tournament Team. Zanrucha knocked down 1,076 pins with three games over 200. She averaged a sold 215.20 with a 245, 222, 193, 246 and a 170. The reigning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Bowler of the Week, Jessica Worsley posted a 199 average and had three games over 200 (234, 216, 213). Teammate Sara DiScioscia had two games over the 200 plateau (202, 231), and an average of 205. Maria Rodriguez averaged a 204 with two 200 games (226, 212) and Martha Perez posted one game over 200 with a 208 and a 193 average.
In baker games, UMES rolled through #6 New Jersey City 861-773, went on to take out #15 Adelphi (798-685), and finished up pool play by toppling #20 Bowie State 902-714. From there the brackets were set as UMES saw DSU in the semi-finals and downed the Hornets 1292-1171, four games to two. They saw the Knights of FDU in the finals and FDU picked up the win four games to two with a difference of one pin, 1231-1230. UMES is back in action this weekend at the Morgan State Invitational in Baltimore, Md. They begin play on Saturday the 16th and continue through Sunday the 17th. |
