Baltimore, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Bowling Team rolled on this past weekend at the Morgan State Invitational, taking sixth place in the 18-team field and recording a mark of six wins and four losses. This meet makes their record 59-30 on the season.

On day one the Hawks took on five teams head to head. They struggled, falling to Morgan State (850-859) and Vanderbilt (844-950) in their first two matches of the day. UMES rebounded however, knocking off New Jersey City University, ranked fourth, one spot above UMES, in the latest NTCA poll, by a score of 985-944. They then defeated Hampton (893-824) and Cheyney 826-553.

The Lady Hawks posted five 200 plus games on the day, two coming from Jessica Worsley who was also named to the All-Tournament Team. She posted a 223 against New Jersey City and a 214 over Cheyney. Laura Zanrucha rolled a 256 against New Jersey City while Christine King tallied a 213 over those same Gothic Knights.

Despite the good performances the Hawks only managed to total 4,398 pins, good enough for just ninth place in the team standings. It was the Hawks' specialty , the baker Games where they would excel, posting 2,831 pins, fifth overall.

In the Baker games, rolled on February 19, 2006, UMES took on top ranked Nebraska, whom the Hawks already defeated once this season. It wasn't to be on this day as the Huckers topped the Hawks, 587-550. UMES rebounded to take out Coppin State (582-493) before falling to second ranked Farleigh Dickinson University 614-521.

UMES would rattle off two more win, topping Sacred Heart (637-534) and Grambling (541-473).

Worsley was the Hawk's highest finisher with a 196 average; she was sixth overall. King averaged a 175.8 while Zanrucha was at 174.4. MaryEtta Lewis averaged a 170.4.

 

 

UMES next takes on top five teams when they hit the lanes on March 4-5, 2006 in Bessemer, Alabama at the NCAA Holiday Classic.
