BALTIMORE, Md. - Two days after being ranked second in the nation, The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) posted a 8-2 mark at the Morgan State Invitational, finishing third in the tournament behind #1 Nebraska and #3 Vanderbilt. UMES didn't bowl their best but the number two team in the nation gutted it out to post eight wins. They opened with team games and posted a 4-1 mark, toppling Morgan State (963-877), Coppin State (1073-735), #20 Bowie State (1004-777) and #17 St. Peter's ( 1026-963). They dropped one match, to #7 New Jersey City, 1006-981. They posted 14 games over 200 with All-American Laura Zanrucha leading the way with three of those games and a 204.8 average. Right behind her Maria Rodriguez posted a 204 average and two plus 200 games. Martha Perez averaged a 203.8 with four 200 plus games and Jessica Worsley averaged a 200.4 with three 200 games. Kristina Frahm rolled two games over 200 and averaged a 196.4. Martha Perez had the high game of the day with a 234 in the win over Coppin State. Zanrucha finished 11th overall followed by Rodriguez and Perez in 12th and 13th places respectively. There were over a 100 bowlers ranked. On day two UMES faced off in Baker matches, taking down #16 Fayetteville State (796-622), Howard (844-615), North Carolina A&T (747-594) and Norfolk State (692-688). Their lone loss on the day was to #1 Nebraska as the Huskers got the better of the Hawks 878-792. UMES finished third in the event with 8,918 pins, just 27 pins behind Vanderbilt and 329 pins behind first place Nebraska. The Hawks are off until March 1 and 2 when they play in a tournament in Bessemer, Alabama.
