BESSEMER, Ala. - It was quite the successful weekend for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Lady Hawks Bowling team. The #2 Hawks posted the best record at the Holiday Bowl Classic and with it set a school record for wins along the way. UMES went 9-1, improved their record to 104-23 and defeated the #4, #9, #5, #10, #3 and #1 teams along the way. In fact, the Lady Hawks closed out the event by toppling #5 Central Missouri, #1 Nebraska, #10 Delaware State and #3 Vanderbilt, all in a row.

"We probably bowled the best we have in a very long time," said Head Coach Sharon Brummell. "I can not be more proud; they really bowled well and topped some incredible teams."

In a tournament that was all head to head matches, UMES opened on day one knocking off #4 Sacred Heart (1007-925), Fontbonne (1036-816), #9 Alabama A&M (1012-981) and Winston-Salem State (1073-750). They dropped one contest, to #10 Minnesota State who bowled just a tad bit better than UMES 1054-1047.

On day two UMES went 5-0, posting wins over South Carolina State (976-759), #5 Central Missouri State (1158-1056), #1 Nebraska (1062-872), #10 Delaware State (953-935) and #3 Vanderbilt (1073-1010).

Perhaps even more impressive than the wins was the effort of the individuals. UMES tallied 31 games over 200 in 50 attempts. Maria Rodriguez was the star as she made the All-Tournament Team and finished second in the field of 106 bowlers. She posted a 223.5 average for the tournament, tallying 2,235 pins. Rodriguez seven games over 200 with a high of an impressive 259.

Also making the All-Tournament Team was Kristina Frahm who averaged 221.8, goof for fifth overall with 2,218 pins. She had an amazing tournament rolling over 200 in all of her ten games. Her high was the best of any UMES kegler, rolling a 266 over #3 Vanderbilt.

Martha Perez was 11th overall, averaging a 209.20 with 2,092 pins. She rolled six games over 200 with a high of 247 coming against Fontbonne.

Another solid outing came from Sara DiScioscia who averaged a 207.14 and tallied five games over 200 in just seven tries. Her high was a 257 against Central Missouri State.

Jessica Worsley posted a 211 against Central Missouri while Jamie Culbreth posted a 210 against Sacred Heart and Christine King had a 201 against Minnesota State.

"We topped some tough teams and proved our #2 ranking," added Brummell. "We just need to keep this momentum going into MEACs."

UMES now bows in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championships on March 21-23 in Norfolk, Va. in search of their third straight title and fourth overall. They hope to follow that with a fifth straight selection to the NCAA Tournament.
