HAMPTON, Va. - The nation's second ranked team bested the field of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) by 532 pins en route to earning the top seed on the opening day of the MEAC Women's Bowling Championships held at Sparetimes Lanes in Hampton, Va.

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) posted nine wins, six of which count towards their record, and with it dominated the conference field on the first day of the Championships racking up 7,207 pins. The six wins improve their record to 110-23 overall. They entered the event with a 24-3 MEAC record.

Freshmen sensations Maria Rodriguez and Kristina Frahm both finished individually in the top five of the team games. Frahm had the most pins of any bowler, 754, while Rodriguez had 736. They averaged 188.5 and 184 respectively. All-American Laura Zanrucha was sixth overall with 718 pins and an average of 179.5. The averages may seem a little low for the Lady Hawks, mostly due to the difficult lanes conditions.

"It was a very difficult shot," said Head Coach Sharon Brummell. "We started well, but just as all the teams did, we got worse as the day progressed. Luckily we were the best of all the teams that struggled and were able to increase our lead."

As a team they totaled four 200 plus games with Zanrucha posting a 233 for the highest of the day of any bowler at the event. Frahm posted a 214, Rodriguez a 203 and former MEAC Most Outstanding Performer Jessica Worsley a 203.

UMES, looking for their third straight Championship and fourth overall, earned the top seed for the third straight year.

#11 Delaware State earned the second seed and posted a 24-3 mark in the MEAC this season. Morgan State and Florida A&M tied for the third post pins with the two teams facing off tomorrow morning to determine the third and fourth seed. Bethune-Cookman, will compete as the fifth seed. The Lady Wildcats played in the finals of last year's tournament before falling to Maryland Eastern Shore 4-3. Sixth seeded Hampton, seventh seeded Norfolk State and North Carolina A&T, who earned the eight seed complete the tournament bracket.

Play continues on Saturday with teams competing against each other in a best-of-seven baker style competition. The MEAC Bowling Championship wraps up on Sunday, March 23 at 10:15 a.m. beginning with the semifinal round and concluding with the championship final. Admission is free and open to the public.
