Allentown, Pa. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Bowling Team is anxiously awaiting a phone call this week that will inform them of an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament. If they are selected it will be their third appearance in three years of the event. In the meantime, the Hawks already know they are headed to another championship. Over the weekend the Lady Hawks competed in one of four United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Sectional Qualifiers. UMES took second in the Allentown sectional, earning a berth in the 2006 USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships, scheduled for April 26-29 at The Cherry Bowl in Rockford, Ill. The top four teams in each sectional qualified for the National Championship. UMES tallied 11,445 pins, second to only Central Florida, who had 11,720 pins. Penn State (11,106) and Shippensburg (11,041) were third and fourth respectively. The four sectional qualifiers were Baker game format. Each team bowled 64 games over a two day period. None of these matches count towards NCAA rankings; as the Hawks were the only team in their sectional that competes in the NCAA. The USBC Championship is open to teams from both NCAA and club programs throughout the United States. The event was formally known as the Intercollegiate Bowling Championships (IBC). Qualifiers from the women's division, which features five former champions and 12 returning teams from 2005, include sectional champions Fresno State, Central Florida, Lindenwood and Wichita State, the defending national champion. Joining them will be Ball State, Morehead State, Nebraska-Omaha, Newman, Penn State, Pikeville, Purdue, Shippensburg, South Florida, West Texas A&M and Western Illinois. UMES is the only NCAA team in the field. The USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships is the pinnacle event of the college bowling season. The tournament brings together the top 16 men's and top 16 women's teams in the country to compete for national titles on national television (College Sports Television).
