ROCKFORD, Ill. - After finishing seventh at last weekend's NCAA Championships, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's bowling team was hoping to rebound at the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships held at the Peach Bowl in Rockford, Ill. While the Hawks didn't capture the nation's other National Championship for collegiate women's bowling, they did improve, taking fifth in the 16-team field and posting an overall record of 3-2 at the event.

The event started well for the Lady Hawks as they qualified in the middle of the field, tying for sixth in total pin fall and earning the seventh seed via tiebreaker. UMES was third after the first block of 16 games, posting 3,075 pins and rolling a high of a 257. It was the afternoon block that hurt the Hawks as they tallied 2,809 pins for a total of 5884 forcing them into a tie with Bellarmine. After that was broken and UMES was seventh, they headed into day two with a first round match up with tenth seeded Fresno State.

UMES would be upset by the Bulldogs in round one, 4-3 (200-244, 178-169, 179-139, 200-169, 205-210, 137-210, 234-213). They would however bounce back in the double elimination bracket, winning their next three matches.

The Lady Hawks topped Ball State 4-0 (196-166, 188-174, 171-170, 195-156), Bellarmine 4-2 (180-163, 173-188, 199-176, 226-186, 168-233, 211-177) and Fresno State 4-2 (193-183, 194-184, 232-203, 210-226, 175-198, 201-163). The win over Fresno State revenged the round one loss and eliminated the Bulldogs from contention.

The celebration didn't last long however as the Hawks returned from a break a little flat and lost to McKendree 4-1 (218-197, 194-234, 195-147, 167-154, 186-178). McKendree and Lindenwood moved on from the contender's bracket to face Central Florida and Wichita State. Lindenwood upset Central Florida twice to make it to the finals while Wichita State eliminated McKendree and went on to win the National Championship over Lindenwood.

UMES ends the season with a 115-41 record in NCAA matches. The 3-2 mark at the USBC event does not count to that mark. The Hawks are currently ranked fifth in the last NTCA poll, finished seventh at the NCAA Championships and fifth at the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships.

"We did better this weekend then we did at the NCAA event," said an exhausted Head Coach Sharon Brummell. "Now we relax a moment that our season has ended, start focusing on recruiting, training and getting better for next year. We know what it feels like to be on top and we want to be back there again, real soon."
