ROCKFORD, ILL. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Bowling Team didn't fair as well as they would have liked to at the NCAA Championships two weeks ago. The Hawks took seventh in the nation, not a bad feat at all, but it left them wanting more. Now, they have their shot at getting more.

UMES headed to the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) National Championships, formerly called IBCs, as the only NCAA team in the field of 16. The field is made up of mostly club teams that are not sponsored by their Athletic Departments. UMES is the exception, but certainly were not picked as the favorites to win the event, until now.

After Thursday's qualifying round, where all 16 teams bowl to earn a seed, the Hawks stand in first place, owners of the number one spot. They started the day in 11th place after just four games, but after 16 games they were first. They then bowled 16 more, 32 games in all, and never skipped a beat. UMES tallied a final game of 228 on their way to 5,864 total pins. They were just ahead of Morehead State's 5,781 and ahead of defending champion Wichita State who was fourth with 5,744.

"I knew from two weeks ago that we had to come in here focused and had to make our spares," said Hawks coach Sharon Brummell, whose team went 0-2 in match play at the NCAA Women's Championships. "We found the shot early and made moves early, and that's what we didn't do a couple weeks ago."

All teams advanced to the double-elimination, match-play bracket Friday, where the field will be cut to the top four men's and women's teams by the end of the day. The semifinals will be conducted Saturday morning with the top two men's and women's teams advancing to the nationally-televised finals, which will be shown on a tape-delayed basis on College Sports Television (CSTV).

The Hawks will face the University of South Florida, the #16 seed in the morning beginning at 9:30 am Central Time.
