ROCKFORD, ILL - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Bowling Team kept their title hopes alive by heading to the Final Four of Women's Bowling at the 2006 United State Bowling Congress (USBC) Championships. It was a tough road for the Hawks who qualified on Thursday as the number one seed. The Hawks won their way out of the Contenders Bracket, or the loser's bracket, on the `red' side of the bracket. It was a tough spot to find themselves in, being the top seed and in the loser's bracket, but UMES didn't get discouraged and battled their way to the television taping on Saturday's final day. UMES took on # 16 University of South Florida in the first match of the day. They easily handled the Bulls in the double elimination bracket topping them 4-1. All of the USBC matches are in Baker format. Next up was Lindenwood, the ninth seeded team, but certainly one capable of walking away National Champions. Lindenwood has a lot of heart and showed it in their first round match against Perdue, coming from down three games to none to winning four games to three. They upset the top seeded Hawks, four games to three in the toughest match of round two. "We didn't give up," said Head Coach Sharon Brummell. "We didn't let falling into the loser's bracket dwell on our minds, we kept plugging along." Indeed they did. The Hawks first eliminated Penn State four and half games to two and half games; they tied one game. Next the Hawks took on West Texas A & M where they eliminated them from the Championships four games to two. Lastly it was on to the last match of the day, a run-in with defending National Champion, The Wichita State Shockers. The Shockers had been sent to the Contenders Bracket when they fell to Lidenwood, the same team that put the Hawks in that bracket. UMES wanted revenge on Lindenwood and the only way to that was to meet them in the semi-finals, they will do that after knocking off Wichita State four games to one and eliminating the defending champions from the title hunt.
On the other side of the bracket Morehead State takes on Central Florida. Just like the Hawks, Central Florida will have to defeat their opponent twice to move into the National Championship match. Both rounds will be taped for television by College Sports Television. (CSTV). The action begins at 9:00 am Central Time at the Cherry Bowl in Rockford. The following release appears compliments of USBC Communications' Lucas Wiseman. Eight teams kept their national title hopes alive Friday by advancing to the semifinals at the 2006 United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Team Championships. The USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships is the pinnacle event of the college bowling season with the top teams in the country vying for national titles at The Cherry Bowl. Four teams punched their ticket to the semifinals early in the day. The Newman and Saginaw Valley State men along with the Lindenwood and Morehead State women all went undefeated Friday and only need to win one more match Saturday to advance to the nationally-televised finals (tape-delayed on CSTV). "Our team chemistry was pretty much there, and we fought back in a lot of matches," said Newman anchor and 2005 Team USA member Cory Simmons, whose team beat defending champion Lindenwood to make the semifinals. "It always feels good to beat last year's champions. They bowled a great match but great team work pushed us past them today." Joining the undefeated teams in the semifinals are the Central Florida and Maryland-Eastern Shore women as well as the Lindenwood and Wichita State men. Each of those teams need to win two matches Saturday against their semifinal opponents to make the television finals. "We've got a longer job to do, but we're going to do whatever it takes to get it done," said Central Florida anchor Stephanie Nation, a three-time U.S. Junior Amateur champion and 2005-06 Collegiate Most Valuable Player. "It's a grueling process." In the women's semifinals Central Florida will battle Morehead State while Lindenwood takes on Maryland-Eastern Shore, which knocked out defending champion Wichita State on Friday. On the men's side, Saginaw Valley State will face Wichita State while Newman takes on Lindenwood.
