ROCKFORD, ILL - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Bowling Team bowed out gracefully today in the 2006 United States Bowling Congress National Championships. They fell four games to three in the semi-finals to Lindenwood, the same team that sent them to the `Contenders Bracket' earlier yesterday.

Lindenwood, the ninth seed after qualifying on Thursday got hot and stayed hot, going on to win the National Championship, defeating the University of Central Florida in the best of three National Championship match. They toppled the Hawks, the number one seed, twice on their way and defeated the four seed Wichita State University Shockers (WSU), defending National Champions. UMES eliminated WSU to get to a semi-final match-up with Lindenwood.

Officially, the Hawks take home third place and put senior Maryetta Lewis on the 2006 USBC All-Tournament Team.

Central Florida, the three seed, came out of the `blue side' of the `Contender's Bracket' to defeat Morehead State twice and force the championship match with Lindenwood.

"What an amazing way to end the season," said Head Coach Sharon Brummell. "Sure we wanted it win it all, but came in focused and played like a team. We earned the top seed in qualifying and then made the semi-final round where we fell to a very good team. We even played them the best of anybody in our match-ups. I am very proud of these young ladies."

The Hawks season ends with a third place finish in the country among the USBC field. Two weeks ago they finished seventh in the Nation among NCAA teams. While neither amounted in a national title, the Hawks end on a high note, saying good-bye to seniors Sandra Maresca and Maryetta Lewis.

"We'll be back again," said Brummell. "We will really miss Sandra and MaryEtta, but we have some solid recruits coming in and a great group of young ladies returning. The Hawks are a team you can't look past, I think this year more than ever we have earned the honor of being considered one of the better teams in women's bowling."
