Newark, Del. - The Lady Hawks Bowling Team got their season under way a little earlier than originally scheduled with an outing to the Blue Hen Open hosted by the University of Delaware on Saturday and Sunday, October 21 and 22, 2006. The event was a change to the Hawks schedule as they eliminated a later season trip to Las Vegas and added this event instead to get the season under way. "It was a change that I felt will get us ready sooner," said Head Coach Sharon Brummell. "We bowled against other teams and I got to see some of our new bowlers in action against outside opponents on a tough sport shot," she added. "Overall I was pretty happy with the results, but the event was great in terms of allowing the coaching staff to know what we have and what we have to work on." The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) came in second in a four-team field, tallying a total of 6.580 pins, second to Shippensburg University who tallied 6,854 pins. Briarcliffe and Virginia Tech were third and fourth respectively. Eight Lady Hawks bowled in the event with sophomore Laura Zanrucha leading the way. She was fourth individually with 1,009 points, 69 points out of first. Her high game of the event was a 201. Freshman sensation Marion Singleton came in eighth with 953 total pins and high game of 215. The reigning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) player of the year, Jessica Worsley tallied a 917 with a high game of 172, good enough for ninth place. Kristie Minnis, Megan Raymond, Ilena Dickson, Jamie Culbreth and Ashley Golden also saw action in games throughout the weekend. Minnis tied Singleton for the high game of the tournament with a 215. Of the four games thrown over 200, the Hawks had three of them.
The event also featured a men's tournament won by William Paterson. Since no other NCAA teams were at this event the Hawks record still stands at 0-0 with their first NCAA matches coming on October 28 and 29, 2006 at the Capitol Classic in Dover, Del, hosted by Delaware State University. |
