Dover, Del. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Bowling Team kicked off its season with a solid outing at the Capital Classic in Dover, Del. hosted by Delaware State University. It was a story of good news bad news for the Lady Hawks who took a disappointing fourth place out of the ten-team field but defeated Farleigh Dickinson University (FDU), the runner-up to last season's NCAA National Championship.

On Saturday, October 29, 2005 the Lady Hawks opened the event going head to head with FDU and defeating them 832-804. Sandra Maresca, the senior co-captain was strong, rolling a 181 to lead the team. UMES would rattle off two more victories, over Morgan State (891-828) and South Carolina State (871-776) before suffering their first lost of the season, a 882-896 defeat to New Jersey City University. The Hawks rebounded nicely to knock out St. Peter's College 848-689. They would finish the day 4-1.

On day two the Hawks would compete in Baker style matches, something UMES is usually strong in. In fact, the Hawks are the only NCAA team ever to roll a perfect Baker game, a team competition where each bowler rolls a frame. (i.e. the first bowler rolls the first and sixth frame and so on)

"We didn't bowl well in the Baker's," said Head Coach Sharon Brummell. "We lost to two teams we haven't lost to in quite a while, we have to pick it up next weekend."

The two teams that defeated the Hawks were both Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) foes, Hampton and Delaware State. The lost to the Lady Pirates of Hampton 543-473 in game one while DSU downed them 489-482, just a seven-pin difference. UMES was strong in games two, four and five, defeating Cheyney (520-434), Howard (528-443) and Morgan State (691-504).

Overall the Hawks record stands at 7-3 after the opening weekend.
